The Art Basel shipping area. Miami Convention Center, Photo AFC
I’ll be attending the Art Basel press preview this morning and reporting later in the day, but in the mean time, a few initial observations the first being that there are a HUGE number of plastic faced people here. Even the press have “augmented” faces! I haven’t seen any artists yet, save for a few bearded art handlers, which may explain a lopsidedness in my plastic surgery surveying thus far, as well as certain amount of crankiness on my part.

Through the thick of a bad mood I did however manage to take a few preliminary shots of the Art Basel fair from the convention center skywalk, most notably the shipping yard. Thrilling I know. But who doesn’t wonder where exhibitors put all their crates? Turns out it’s in an adjacent hall. As for what the convention center looks like, I imagine much the same as last year, but I’ve only got the crummy shot above to go on.. I had to shoot through a crack in a blind, which tends to limit a camera’s field of vision. You’ll see more later today assuming fair organizers decide to let us all look down on the great borg cube from above.

So, did any art handler meet an unfortunate fate setting up the show this year? I’m not talking about the food, either….

Oh you mean being run over by a towmoter or something? I hear it happens every year, but I haven’t heard of anything specific. I have heard of specific works being damaged however…there’s something that has to occur a fair bit during these fairs.
