Martin Creed, ArtReview.com Meet MindHeist/Shoe Advertisers UPDATED

Unfortunately for artist Martin Creed, whose performance piece No. 850 has runners sprinting down the halls of the Tate every 30 seconds, the country’s best athletes are currently occupied at the Olympics. The work survived the blow. ArtReview.com puts together an informative short on youtube with interview footage of the artist explaining the work.

Update: Due to the fact that the marketing agents from [redacted] have been trolling art blogs with links to their video, their youtube has been removed and the post edited. Yuck.

“otherwise the retort is amusing and extremely well edited”

It better be well-edited, it’s an ad for Puma. It’s amusing in a Jackass sort of way I suppose, but didn’t inspire me to buy a pair of Pumas any time soon.

Thanks for pointing that out. I updated the post — it’s totally obvious, but I didn’t see it when I received the tip yesterday. I have to say, I find that kind of advertising tactic a little gross.

I’ll one up you on the gross and sleazy factor, Paddy. See the second post in my comments section in my link to Hrag’s Poster Boy post. It MIGHT be an unsuspecting customer but everything about it (including the new and semi-anon blog id) points to the advertising company hiring professional trolls.

Okay I understand that perhaps their using less than forward tactics. But what about us readers who are interested in seeing the video? Can you at least tell us what/where to search? I tried looking on youtube, but can’t find it. Thanks! – Nancy (the non-troll!)

Hi Paddy,

Thanks so much for your speedy and in-depth reply – I wasn’t anticipating such individualized attention!Since I didn’t get a chance to read the original post I felt a bit out of the loop! lol

I would never say I feel sorry for big companies, particularly ones that use the likes of sweat shops, etc. However, I do acknowledge that it is becoming harder and harder to get their message out – so tactics are getting more varied. The idea of bringing Creed’s work to a larger audience does appeal to me. But that said, I have taken a look at the press release and to be honest with you I do question its relationship to Puma. It all seems a big cloak and dagger. As someone who used to work in PR (many lives ago) is appears to be less than professional. I suspect this is the work of kids trying to “make it” (with a little parental help).

Anyway it is an interesting dialogue.

Cheers

My friend is one of the runners for this piece of work, the way i understand it, is that when they started out they didn’t have the puma apparel but after a few practices, health and safety recommended they have proper running shoes… so i assumed to some extent asking puma was just a way of curbing costs.

Having said that, how much does creed really need to curb costs? perhaps it’s just part of the immaterialism of the work ;/

Ben: Interesting. In the original post there was a response to Creed’s piece that looked like a Puma ad, which was removed due to blog trolling on the part of the maker. They sent me a full press release explaining the work this morning, though I doubt they noticed the Puma sponsorship themselves as they made no mention of it. Notably, virtually all their “reaction” quotes mentioned are unsearchable.
