Here’s a list I could hardly agree less with. Why are almost all the “best” shows museum exhibitions or biennials? And the Met’s Courbet show at the top of the list? How many rooms of awful paintings does there have to be before they interfere with the good stuff?

Because the New Yorker is written for dabblers who don’t know anything about art, fiction, or poetry. If you have a brain and read the New Yorker, you must be willing to lower your expectations.

Paddy…yes!!! I felt the same way about the Courbet show. Really uneven-a rollercoaster ride of awful dips and a few great highs. Every time I try to voice this opinion to other artists they paint me as a phillistine and cast me horrified and pitying glances. Sigh.

Ha! You’re not a phillistine! The show was interesting for being uneven, but not good. I mean that deer in the snow painting in the last room offers a surprising look at what bad photoshop jobs would come to look like in the future.

I was like…dude, pick a direction of some sort, and, while you’re at it…GET OVER YOURSELF!!! But I admit I kinda liked the insanity of the ocean scapes.

Psst. I also found the Poussin show rigid and uninspiring (ducking down now and bracing for a torrent of rotten tomatoes)

So, Art Fag, have you listed your own list of fave shows of 2008 anywhere?

Cheers,

Cedric
