Meet Ceci Moss and Tom Moody!

This first went live while I was on a trip in LA. I showed the site to the friends I stayed with, and we kept passing my laptop around in awe. It’s had a very similar effect on almost everyone else I’ve discussed the work with. One of my favorite projects.
- http://www.movingimagesource.us/ – Moving Image Source
The Museum of the Moving Image launched Moving Image Source this year. Not only are their articles by noted critics and scholars top notch, they also maintain a comprehensive research guide and an international calendar. Nice!
- http://www.artreview.com/artistInResidence – ArtReview’s Artist in Residence
ArtReview’s Artist in Residence section (formerly Project Space) regularly commissions web-based work by emerging and established artists. Each work is accompanied by an interview with the artist. Artists are given free license to use the space as they wish. Cory Arcangel kept the demo version of Project Space, and, in a similar move to play with the confines of the space itself, Matt Keegan and Cody Trepte rearranged the tech specs distributed to participating artists into a nonsensical slide show.
- http://asdfmakes.com/ – ASDF Makes
An ongoing collaboration between Mylinh Trieu Nguyen and David Horvitz. Their exhibition For a Brief Time Only… is currently on view in my living room.
- http://www.realitycpu.com/ -Reality CPU by Tabor Robak
Like being inside the “set” of Tron, but uber low-fi style.
- http://www.vernissagetv.com – Vernissage TV
Vernissage TV produce some of the best videos covering contemporary art on the web. Period.
- http://longplayer.org/ – Longplayer by Jem Finer
This project began in 1999 (December 31st, 1999 to be exact) so it may not “count” as a best of for 2008. But I discovered it this year, so I’m putting it on my list. Commissioned by Artangel, Longplayer is a musical composition that is intended to last for one thousand years. You can read more about how they hope to carry that out on the website. Listen to Longplayer right here.

F.A.T. Lab are pretty much geniuses.

Don’t watch this for too long.

“All Flickr top ten”
I basically hate flickr (the regular sizing, “all sizes” instead of “enlarge,” corporate host, etc.) but am fascinated by the way artists are using it to create bottomless wells of their own production. Here are creators’ and/or curators’ flickr streams that caught my eye in the past year. The generative artists (who use computer algorithms in attempt to limn the previously-unseen) have especially embraced flickr and their Piranesian or Borgesian efforts are prominent in this Top Ten.
- flickr fruits – a regular series from the blog “data is nature,” where some of my top ten came from.
- brenna murphy – everyday objects arranged in allover 2-D patterns, photographed, posted, and dismantled (I assume), plus digital collages with a similar feel.
- dave bollinger – escher-esque digital landscapes (Escher to the power of ten), seductive and rigorous.
- travis hallenbeck – picture-taker with a great eye for found bitmap style imagery, the poetically ordinary, and the exuberantly humble online.
- travis hallenbeck’s favorites – hallenbeck’s collection of other people’s flickrs merits its own entry.
- cynthia lim – animals in dark, convoluted architectural spaces, drawn scratchboard style: expressionism is not dead.
- desaxismundi – digital abstractions by producer who frequently veejays this material.
- wannes deprez / ony one – tasty architecture and design images, emphasizing the offbeat and the vintage (hat tip lalblog.tumblr).
- marius watz – code-based abstractions translated to a gallery setting, often quite handsomely.
- rwild – “r.b.wild specializes in ‘non-geo’ graphical information systems, with a particular focus on mapping knowledge domains“.

I’m a major fan of F.A.T. Lab.
The flickr list is a great resource too. (I regret not doing enough research into how artists use flickr, when I was teaching)

One of my least favorite pompous academic types over on the Rhizome boards is still complaining about Web 2.0 detritus gleaners or whatever. The man evidently doesn’t stop talking for a second to see what artists are actually doing on the web.
