Many Crowns of Michael Jackson To Be Auctioned This April

Art Fag City, Michael Jackson, genious
This stunning “geniuses in sunglasses” recalls Loshadka’s dog breeds in sunglasses

How many crowns does one King of Pop need?  According to The Guardian’s Michael Jackson Neverland Ranch foreclosure and auction highlights profile last week, at least two, coupled by one painting depicting the star as King, a velvet cape, and the royal ready-to-wear jacket complete with gold buttons and sash.

Say what you will about Michael Jackson’s 30 plus years of bizarre behavior — he was an unusually good collector (by certain fine art standards).  More than one dealer I’ve talked to describe focus, patience, and a willingness to take risks as the cornerstone of esteemed collections and these virtues were certainly visible amongst the objects from Jackson’s Neverland Ranch. So how is it that Sotheby’s or Christie’s has not taken on the work?  Instead, Darren Julien, a Los Angeles-based auctioneer of celebrity merchandise, scoops the sale of the century, set to take place this April at The Beverly Hills Hotel.  Highlights below:

Art Fag City, Michael Jackson, painting
A portrait of Michael Jackson dressed as a king, oil on canvas, signed and dated 1995 and housed in an elaborate gold frame. Guide price $4,000-$6,000

Oh, yes. The king himself.

Art Fag City, Michael Jackson, auction, socks
Michael Jackson’s Triumph-era socks with uppers covered in rhinestone banding. 1981, Guide price $600-$800

These increasingly hard to find bling socks could be yours.  Condition report N/A through the Guardian, but they seem to lack holes.

Art Fag City, Michael Jackson, auction, cape
A full-length red velvet cape with detachable faux ermine collar with gold rope trim, gold metal cross brooch with faux cabachon gems and satin lining. Guide price $300-$500

What’s a King without a cape?

Art Fag City, Michael Jackson, auction, Jeff Koons
A Brevetti Gaggia espresso and cappuccino machine. Guide price $1,000-$2,000

I still can’t believe this isn’t a Jeff Koons piece.

Art Fag City, Michael Jackson, auction, Edward Scissorhands
The prop ‘scissorhand’ gloves that Johnny Depp wore in Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands. Guide price $4,000-$6,000

As an object and documentation of the performative act this piece may be the most “arty” of the highlights provided.  Woot?

Art Fag City, Michael Jackson, auction, crown
A Katherine Baumann crown-shaped minaudiere with red, green and gold jewels. Guide price $800-$1,200

Let’s be honest, Michael Jackson probably never *needed* this particular trinket anyway.

Oy, I was hoping to snatch this painting at the auction but now that you publicized it further I will surely be outbid by art world connoisseurs.

The painting of him as a king is so tacky, but it is an important piece of pop art and important for the psychological study of Michael.

the portrait of michael jackson is a peice of history! ..once youve taken a class or two in art histroy..you will see many artists such as Velasquez painted himself in portraits of may kings and their families! He even painted an emblem on his “armor” he was just an artist! this was this artists way of leaving his mark and that was many moons ago! its been done before!! and it is only a symbol of someone who as greatly shed their god given talent to us undeserving peasants who cant just appreciate him for what he really is and that is a king!!! realize it open your hearts and stop being so god darn opinionated and enjoy the fruits of his talents while you still have all your sences god has so willingly let you have!

id like to add, that “tacky” was never a part of Michael Jacksons vocabulary, he wouldn’t dare sound so ignorant or mean. MICHAEL LOVED EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE. An oil painting is an expression of ones god given talent as a painter to another as an entertainer and much much more. many influential people were painted , not because they wanted to be but maybe the painters themselves chose them. I think it is a very beautiful peice of work and i would be happy to own it with great respect no matter how much it costs at price, it would certainly be in good hands..Rest in Piece dear Michael “I Love you MORE!”

it really is unbelievable how people still react to everything MJ. He had probably been the most misunderstood man of the century and even the fact that he is gone now doesn’t seem to soften the hearts of those prejudiced. why they still insist on not leaving him rest in peace is beyond me..where i come from, we have a proverb which seems to be custom tailored for MJ: “you can’t cover the sun with mud” ..
