Not since What’s New Pussycat has this blog been graced with such enjoyable vagina art. Clients of advertising network Glam Media, however, were not nearly as taken with the work and demanded This Heart’s on Fire immediately remove Clayton Cubitt’s image promoting the exhibition Talk Dirty To Me, at Larissa Goldston Gallery. The show, which featured well-known artists such as Mel Bochner, James Siena, Kalup Linzy, and Tracy Emin opened yesterday, though reputability did not seem to impress those lodging the complaints. Correspondence indicates that the advertisers were concerned with the unfriendly “family” aspect of these images, a rather suspect term according to Cubitt, who points out on his blog just where babies come from.
To be honest, I’m not brimming with outrage over this censorship, even though it’s obviously stupid. If the blogger’s mysterious and offended advertiser “TK Maxx” wouldn’t display such images in their store for “family” issues, it’s unlikely they’d be excited to see their name beside it elsewhere. Assuming This Heart’s On Fire intends to run a fair percentage of Fine Art related content, they’d likely run into this problem again. As such, the ad may simply be poorly placed.
It did however, prompt a truly inspired Keira Knightley vagina sandwich post, marking a high point in my blog reading this week.
