The Art Law Blog: Eye on the Ball

Donn Zaretsky doesn’t see any reason for outrage now that The Rose Museum (1) will not be closed but instead converted into a research and study center plus gallery and (2) only “a limited number” of pieces will be sold “if the need arises in the future.” I’ll admit to feeling “residual outrage”, though he’s right. The tone of this conversation should change.

If the tone has changed, its largely due to the efforts of Rasky Baerlein Strategic Communications, a public relations firm specializing in crisis management that Brandeis has hired to deal with the Rose fiasco. Brandeis prez Jehuda Reinharz’ statements since the initial bombshell have vague at best. If the outrage has subsided, its largely because the side with the power has shut the argument down for the most part, for now. The sticking point for me at least, is that now Brandeis will quietly sell off its collection once the hubbub has died down for a long stretch.
