In Real Life: James Turrell and Alice Aycock in Summation

A little more of my time than I would have liked at Capricious Space this weekend turned into a “come watch me type” performance, or in my case, “come watch me resize images for the web”.  Frankly though, not as much as I thought.  The four hour residency more or less turned into a round table discussion by the end, which I see as a positive turn of events.

Part of In Real Life, an exhibition asking web practitioners to make the back end of their sites visible, Art Fag City pitted James Turrell and Alice Aycock sculptures against one another in a reader driven Google Map competition.

Which artist has the most visible sculptures on Google?  According to this contest, James Turrell, but that’s only because those were the sculptures commenters overwhelmingly chose to seek out.   A few reflections on the contest and exhibition below:

1. Not too much of a surprise, but James Turrell sculptures lose something via satellite image.  Circle inside a square, square inside a square, and other variations on that formula. Personally, I preferred the Aycock sculptures, which often resemble debris.

2. I won’t bore everyone with “the discussion was the best part of the exhibition” talk, but at the very least, it was an unexpected perk. I didn’t get as much up on the blog as I had thought as a result.

3. From my perspective, the most engaging aspect of In Real Life, was what happened when you introduced real time interaction to a practice that typically removes aspect of working. For me, this induced more stress than I anticipated; Real Time interaction doesn’t usually appear on the blog.  As such, the next permutation of this project for Art Fag City, would likely require greater interactivity and a live video feed to the blog.

A special thanks to Laurel Ptak at iheartphotograph and Capricious Space for inviting us to be part of this exhibition.
