This just in via Facebook: Tim Hortons Donuts sucks. Gay Rights reports the company Providence franchise has agreed to co-sponsor an anti-gay marriage rally in Rhode Island, sponsored by the National Organization for Marriage. Given that the company just entered the city of heathens, it better get ready for an onslaught of negative press. Also, note AFC HQ Tim Horton donut patronage now officially grinds to a halt.

UPDATE: The Franchise has rescinded its sponsorship.

I see Tim Hortons is a Drive Thru. Perhaps the restaurant is positioning itself for heterosexual drive-thru marriages and drive-through divorces–because it’s so importaint to maintain the propriety of heterosexual marriage. Hey, they could hook up with the Dennys chain to keep those marriages nice and white, too.

Just to be clear, it’s not the company that agreed to co-sponsor it, it’s the individual franchisee. The person who owns that particular store.

I would be surprised if the owner didn’t get a smack-down from Tim Horton’s corporate.

So, yes, it’s yucky, and the person who owns that particular Tim Horton’s is a total schmuck. But it’s not a corporate policy.

As such, if people stop going to Tim Horton’s, then hopefully they’ll let head office know that they’re stopping patronage of all stores until the corporate branch gets their franchisees under control and keep them from using the Tim Horton’s banner to support this type of thing.

Head office has investigated, and made the franchise owner pull their sponsorship.

Seems ironic that a brand with cultural ties to a country that has allowed same-sex marriage for years would ever agree to sponsor an event that protests it. As a Canadian I think this shows it’s the differences in our values we should be proud of, not a superficial corporate image of what being Canadian means.
