Best Link Ever: Hipster Demographic Penetrates Yet Another Market

Say it: cupcakes are so late 2008 and my tats are unique. Image and caption via: Look at This Hipster Fucking.

Looks like the Lesbians For Men Club thrives in hipster porn too. As evidenced above, this is just one of the many fine shots and captions you’ll see at this week’s Best Link Ever, Look at This Hipster Fucking. Taking its name from the popular blog, Look at This Fucking Hipster, sex educator and blogger Melissa Gira Grant, updates the tumblr on a semi regular basis, seeking out photographs that, arguably, are about more than just penetration. This tends to mean a photograph or two by Ryan McGinley and Dash Snow — work art critics have at times described as lifestyle fashion — but we’re okay with that. It’s a blog about hipsters fucking; we’re not subjecting it to the highest of fine art standards.

Best Link Ever is a weekly column posted on Fridays culling the best gems of the Internet, maintained by AFC Associate Editor Karen Archey.  This week’s column was curated by Archey and written by Paddy Johnson

Definitely, though I liked it a lot better when I was younger. There’s an intense narcissism to that book I have a hard time with now. In the context of fucking I think it works brilliantly, but I’m not a fan of the posed half naked self-portraits. This is one of the few costume things I think works well:

She has the worst flash website in the world:

the narcissism was always the most interesting aspect of that book because i don’t think it was planned – it was during the time when little digital cameras were starting to appear and you could shoot and frame yourself into a little digital screen on the camera for the first time. those cameras dared you to be in the frame – they were so small and so immediate. it was a digital image pre-cursor of what was to come.

and wow is that newish flash website bad – ouch.

I like the idea that the narcissism is a reflection of its time — a natural reaction to the digital camera — though wonder if the lack of planning means anything. I mean, I assume anyone who *knew* they were indulging in narcissism, would stop.

I do like these ideas about narcissism, but I don’t think anyone who knew would stop. My work through undergrad had a lot of that to it as well as exhibitionism and voyeurism. That is part of the fun of being in your early 20s. This was pre-social networking and had a different place in the growth of me as a photographic artist than it would today where I would probably just post them to facebook and be done with it.

I’ve never been that interested in Ryan McGinley’s work, but I think the Shower photo is very compelling, it never looses its power for me.

I posted a link to “Look at This Hipster Fucking” on my facebook wall and it got me banned (a blessing in disguise, really).
