I don't have to watch BRAVO's yet-to-be-released reality show Work of Art: The Next Great Artist to know casting socialite and Half Gallery owner Bill Powers as a judge is a problem. Take Half Gallery's promo text for Olivier Zahm's show in September and my submission for Hyperallergic's Worse. Press. Ever. competition: This isn't just the result of some art lacky who doesn't know what they're doing — it's the kind of vapid crap people come up with when they’re most interested in social standing and material culture. These are the folks who give art a bad name. Vote this guy down!

is that what an artist is supposed to look like?

“AKA: quest for tail” has me weeping…you can never go wrong with the word “tail” or “trim” in humor…

Well done!

“…vapid crap people come up with when they’re most interested in social standing and material culture. These are the folks who give art a bad name.” Once again this is the Paddy and the sentiment I admire.

I do have to say I’ve been wearing prescription sunglasses for 48 years and my near vision is perfect. Not many 63 year old Artists can say that. All visual Artists should be protecting their eyes. Bias against sunglasses be damned.

Is this something like the Saatchi tv debut in the uk a couple of months ago?

It literally was like watching paint dry (artists sitting in their space contemplating, anyone?) apart from the bits they tried to sex-up which were, well, just as unbelievably riveting – maybe it was just too much of a busman’s holiday for me as I tend to stare at blank canvases on a daily basis.

But you know, the poor old arts do need a big-up and who better to do that than the man himself – but the fact the whole purpose centred around this lottery like structure with the golden carrot held up by Saatchi for the winner no, I’m not jealous!) to have his blessing really must be like winning the lottery so good luck to them!. And the BBC actually listed the program under factual, now that’s scary.

You don’t go to BRAVO for intelligent conversations about art. It probably
will not matter who judges this show.

I love a good dense social fresco and autofictional picture.

This was a really tough call. I’m a reader of Purple and kind of like it’s stupidity and trashy glamour. But Zahm seems to have a really one-sided view of nightlife culture. You can only do all naked spreads in a ‘fashion magazine’ so many times.

As execrable as the first press release was, I’ll still florid hyper-sincerity over Zahms brand of laconic vapidity. Plus the made up words and mispellings are an epic fail. I voted for you, P.

I still think the Elmgreen and Dragset press release was the worst, but the Zahm had the edge of being incomprehensible *and* implicitly sexed-up. Congratulations on your win. (One more [sic] from that press release: “what he is producing and with who”–should be “whom.”)

I think the Elmgreen and Dragset was probably worse too, but I thought using it would be cheating so I opted for the Zahm.

From Kilston’s find, “the desire to mould into a plastic shape undermining visual recognition and shunt man onto the track of imagination” is a phrase to treasure.
