PS1 released the participating artist names in their Greater New York show, which will run May 23rd to October 18th. A number of artists included work with text and/or narrative in some way, a fairly enjoyable art world trend as far as trends go. An Atlas of Radical Cartography, Sharon Hayes, and DETEXT provide good examples of this, though there are more than I’ve listed above.

Incidentally, DETEXT’s first and only appearance on the blog prior to this post was their featured work at X-Initiative’s closing one night exhibition. Chronicling that event, DETEXT shares an amusing anecdote on the splash page of their website under the heading “What People Are Saying About Us”:

“WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO FINISH HANGING YOUR STUFF? THE IMPORTANT ART CRITIC [JERRY SALTZ] IS AROUND THE CORNER. HE CAN’T SEE MY WORKS IF YOU ARE THERE ON THE LADDER.” Fellow Artist at X-Initiative

I should note that DETEXT, like many of the people on this list aren’t overly familiar names. This is a good sign. Names after the jump.

Michele Abeles, David Adamo, Ei Arakawa, An Atlas of Radical Cartography, Tauba Auerbach, Darren Bader, Kerstin Brätsch, David Brooks, The Bruce High Quality Foundation, Leidy Churchman, Deville Cohen, Brody Condon, Caleb Considine, William Cordova, Delusional Downtown Divas (Joana Avillez, Lena Dunham, Isabel Halley), DETEXT, Debo Eilers, Franklin Evans, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Zipora Fried, Daniel Gordon, Tamar Halpern, K8 Hardy, Tommy Hartung, Sharon Hayes, Vlatka Horvat, Matt Hoyt, Alex Hubbard, Alisha Kerlin, Liz Magic Laser, Deana Lawson, Leigh Ledare, Dani Leventhal, Kalup Linzy, Tala Madani, Nick Mauss, Ryan McNamara, Dave Miko, Amir Mogharabi, Sam Moyer, Nico Muhly, Rashaad Newsome, Dominic Nurre, Brian O'Connell, Alice O'Malley, Virginia Overton, Adam Pendleton, Maria Petschnig, Zak Prekop, Ishmael Randall Weeks, Gilad Ratman, Lucy Raven, Robbinschilds, Mariah Robertson, Adele Röder, Emily Roysdon, Aki Sasamoto, David Benjamin, Sherry Erin Shirreff, Xaviera Simmons, A.L. Steiner, Elisabeth Subrin, Hank Willis Thomas, Naama Tsabar, Guido van der Werve, Conrad Ventur, Amy Yao, Pinar Yolacan.

I’m assuming this was just a typo, but heads up, it’s David Benjamin Sherry, Erin Shirreff, not David Benjamin, Sherry Erin Shirreff.

Looks good but it doesn’t look like it covers the past 5 years of what has been happening in New York, looks more like the past 5 months.

Jill & Hayward – I’d say I recognize about 75% of the names on the list, which was the same as the Whitney. The thing is the 25% I don’t recognize also haven’t shown a lot.

Also: Steiner’s a big name too. Not sure why she she’s getting props over the other big names on the list.

As I understood it, Greater New York is supposed to be featuring “young” artists who haven’t yet received major gallery exposure here. So not recognizing most of the names is a good thing.
And reducing the number of included artists makes for a more cohesive show (unless this is a further sign of financial difficulties). If I recall, the 2005 version had over 200 artists, 20 curators.

@Kalm In that respect I think they probably could have done a better job. I expect there to be some big names in most of these shows, but Leigh Ledare shows at Greene Naftali! There’s more than a few names like that on the list.

A connect the dot chart ala Powhida which tracks commonalities like dealers, collectors, curators, and inclusion in the other survey shows like the latest Whitney Biennial would be interesting.

My comment was aimed more at how a majority of the list looks like a browsing through of what has been on since last October. As I understood it, the show was meant to showcase artists in the New York area that have emerged since 2005. It is refreshing to see some new and interesting artists included, but is it ADD?

I see a saturation And overproduction of artists And works. At the same time we Are living a crisis about language, roles And Art format. We need a private And more reflective Art.

At the MoMA press breakfast some months ago, Biesenbach stated that this years’ Greater NY was not going to be an “age-ist” show. Instead he was going to focus on a mixture of artist who have been living and practicing in NYC for quite some time along with young artists. But this list doesn’t seem to hold up to that very well. There is also too much overlap and not enough risk being taken – definitely not the way that I thought Biesenbach would run PS 1 – the new echo-chamber of Manhattan museums.nnKerstin Braetsch got a hefty write-up in the February issue of Monopol, a German art magazine that Biesenbach pens a small column for every month. Braetsch’s NY-based DAS INSTITUT and her poster art – that looks like an Exit Art show, but not nearly as political – was oddly romanticized.

if it was so great then why is there visibly so little diversity in the line up? Most of the selecteds work is visually alike.

too bad for the audiences, great for the artists
