“This is what google’s search algorithm considers similar to the “optidisc” image in the upper left corner. Not sure which is preferable–a world conjured by ignorant automata or a “wikipedia world” where someone attempts to makes sense of the noise.”

I have noticed the randomness of Google Images, too! I want to use it more for some of my art. I just wish it would let you enter your own image. (I guess Tom Moody just searched for his Optidisc to try to get Similar Images.) They’re doing that with Google Goggles, but that’s only available for Android phones right now. I hope they never completely fix the algorithm. I love the random associations. There isn’t enough of that on the web. Everything is trying so hard to take you only to exactly what you were looking for. Google just seriously increased online serendipity, though, when they added the “Something different” feature in their latest redesign. I use that all the time now, and I’ve learned some fascinating things.

I was searching for OptiDisc, I think, because there are several versions of it online and was curious which Google considered “definitive.” (Slow day.) I “discovered” the “similar images” function and thought it would make an interesting collage. The random associations are interesting but an awful lot of it is commercial logos for fly-by-night companies. That hits a little too close to home for this artist, ha ha.
