Bjoern Meyer-Ebrecht, Untitled (Book Covers III), 2009, Wall Reliefs, 4 Book Covers, 19.5 x 99 inches

Looks like Bushwick Open Studios is going to be a big deal. I’ve seen it listed, oh, ALL OVER THE INTERNET. The Arts in Bushwick site counts 300 shows at over 150 locations, which is a little insane, but they’ve designated 14 hub spaces to help visitors get around. The website’s actually pretty useful too, so it’s worth spending a bit of time on it to plan your weekend.

I’m still not sure what my weekend will look like, but here’s a few early recommendations with location links:

Bjoern Meyer-Ebrecht, collage,

Bjoern Meyer- Ebrecht, 1182 Flushing Ave – The man behind the wall relief books pictured in the lede image of this post. Need I say more?

Aaron Williams, Untitled, 2009, 58×75.25×72.25 inches, wood, spray-paint, plexiglass and book pages

Aaron Williams at 1717 Troutman St. I reviewed his show at Max Protetch here.

Kurt Schwitters, Merzbau, 1923-1936

The non-profit art space Norte Maar has a great looking show opening tomorrow: THE MERZBUSH: elegies to Kurt Schwitters. Installations by Phong Bui, Ali Aschman, Michele Aurajo, Ben Godward, Rico Gatson, Suzanne Goldenberg, Brece Honeycutt, Norman Jabaut, Ellen Letcher, Amy Lincoln, Ryan Schoreder, Josette Urso and others. Notably, this is curator, artist and now Executive Director Austin Thomas’s new haunt.

David McBride, Untitled (discoball), 2010

David McBride, 1182 Flushing Ave. I’m not sure what medium McBride’s working in now, but in 2006 he was an emerging artist profiled on the blog. It’s worth a look.

Letha Wilson, Right Back at You, 2009, digital print, flashlight, rocks, 36 x 24 x 30 inches

Letha Wilson, 1182 Flushing Ave This piece reminds me a little of Erin Sheriff’s Rodin Crater slide show of rephotographed images of a print out she made of the still unfinished earth work by James Turrell. I like the reflective use of light in Wilson’s work a little better though because it actively points the viewer’s vision in a more direct manner.

Letha Wilson has an amazing edition for sale at BOS this weekend, too. Each photo in the edition is the slight color variation of a sunset, folded to suggest a paper plane. Just awesome! Come check it out:

World’ Greatest, an edition and art sale with tons of amazing work by over 40 artists, under $50!

Please excuse the shameless self-promotion, but a collective I'm a part of has an installation that I think you might like. Future Archaeology is an ongoing series of projects about "cybernetic ecology." We have an installation up now called Field Station — it's in my apartment, #127 in the BOS program.

We're a mixed bunch — two of us went to ITP, one just graduated from Hunter's MFA program, one is an experimental film/performance guy, and an architect/urban planner.

Here's a video from our last event in Williamsburg: http://vimeo.com/12304896

Assuming the occasional article about crackheads stabbing innocent people in the forehead with screwdrivers doesn’t scare you a ride by this growing outpost will inevitably embolden you and leave you feeling that despite all the hoopla of NY lately being a cultural deathbed this quixotic tribe of artistic collectives will have you wondering otherwise.

It’s a late Sunday afternoon and despite the fact that the fourth annual Bushwick Open Studios is coming to a close the crowds keep flocking to the courtyard of English Kills Art gallery. As much as the gallery has grown to mythical status and some sort of epicenter of the local art world here, (alongside Norte Maar’ and Factory Fresh) it’s obvious the owner, Chris- who is currently chewing on a gob of tobacco and spitting it wherever he sees fit- doesn’t really care.

Thanks for the mention of a great show! I can’t take the credit for curating it, though, Jason Andrew did the bang up job! We of course, love ARTFAGCITY here in Bushwick!!
