AFC’s Art Sneaker Contest: The Results!

by Liza Eliano on August 19, 2010 · 15 comments Breaking!

It’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for: AFC announces the winner of our art sneaker contest! Last week we asked artist commenters to send in their best shot at a custom made art sneaker. The winner gets $100,00 provided by Prismacolor…wait, just kidding. Our prize is much better–a classy C-Town lunch in Bedstuy, Brooklyn with the AFC team. After a cut throat competition and submissions of the good, the bad, and the un-sneaker related, the results are in!

THE WINNER: AFC Hightops by Alex McLeod

We realize it might be uncouth to chose a sneaker with an AFC brand as the winner, but we’re doing it anyway. Alex McLeod’s hilarious earth sneakers top the list. The artist certainly knew what he was doing–“I figured I couldn’t go too far wrong with official Art Fag magenta and comic sans ;D,” he wrote to us in an email. Alex’s choice may be a nod to Paddy’s recent complaint over twitter that Comic Sans’ unprofessional stereotype was getting old. If so, Alex wins extra sandwich toppings for the inside joke!

SECOND PLACE: Mr. Dropout Gif by Nate Hill

Nate Hill’s clever gif, with photo by Tod Seelie, snags second place, plus the award for best self-promotion. The gif is so good, we’ll ignore the fact that the piece is more about Nate’s recent project, Mr. Dropout, than an art sneaker. Nate noted that his submission “is a little more on the conceptual side.” We’re guessing Mr. Dropout’s levitation trick means he’s way above the art sneaker fad.

THIRD PLACE: Vintage Barbie Sneakers by Nathalie Chikhi

These are on the subdued side, but who doesn’t love tiny shoes? Nathalie Chikhi‘s vintage barbie sneakers are too precious to handle, plus the bleak photo adds to their delicacy. Art sneakers seem to be defined by their boldness, but Chikhi’s miniaturized version are a breath of fresh air.

So there you have it! Congratulations to the winner, and thanks to all our upstanding artist commenters for sending in your submissions. Alex McLeod, we’ll see you at C-Town!

If you live in Toronto the C-Town lunch is transferable: a field trip to Food Basics the next time I’m in town. On the down side you won’t meet Liza and Michelle — but waiting a year to collect the prize will create that problem anyway.

I’m really impressed by all of these! I have to say, my favorite in terms of concept would be Ms. Chikhi’s Barbie shoes. Total reversal of the “loud and proud” nature of art shoes. Good job!
