Work of Art Gears Up For A Second Season

Screengrab from Work of Art trailer

BRAVO has discovered a new reality show gold mine: the art world. Not only is the network casting for a docudrama on 20-something gallerinas, but yesterday, the TV network released a tear-filled trailer for Work of Art’s second season (beginning October 12th). The series seeks to find America’s next great artist (so far they’ve come up empty handed), once more pitting a few artist hopefuls against one another for a cash pot of $100,000. We’ll soon see what fruits the season has to bear, but whatever they are they will not include Salon 94 gallerist Jeanne Greenberg Rohatyn: the dealer has decided against returning as a full time judge. Bill Powers, critic Jerry Saltz, and auctioneer Simon de Pury return. Meanwhile, a New York-based contestant going by the name of “Sucklord” has already gained a fair bit of press for a little-known but potentially undesirable trait: the fact that his name is “Sucklord”. We failed to nibble on that bait last year when we received a pitch from a representative of the artist, but since BRAVO didn’t, here’s a taste of what’s in store. From AFC’s email archives:

    Hi Paddy,
Below is info on a revolting, worthless art opening from the intergalactic dirtbag SUCKLORD. Also below are links to view sample images of the work that will waste precious Boo-Hooray gallery wall space. The show promises to intrigue even the most critical New Yorkers. The SUCKLORD’s appeal reaches far beyond the art community. His cult following includes toy collectors, b-side movie buffs, culture fiends and pathetic middle-aged fat guys who live with their mothers. For christ’s sake, he’s been sold in Christie’s and Phillips auctions. Help us ruin your reader’s evening by listing the event. Lastly, please let me know if you are interested in interview Mr.SUCKLORD. Hopefully, he will spit in your face.

Read the press release here if you dare, and tune in October 12th to see if anyone gets hit in the face with Sucklord’s spit.

Editor’s Note: If BRAVO takes even one of our Better Challenge suggestions from last year (made in collaboration with c-monster), the context of that saliva will be a lot more interesting.

dude, it’s like they say, if you cry hard enough you will make it. but, then, again, you can document all those cry babies and make a very funny video. make it’ll go viral and that might be your biggest achievement. who knows. i went to the first taping and all the art was really mediocre, steve coogan was there, which was weird.

Just curious why you would quote an anonymous person with a pseudonym and not allow anonymous comments? How do you know this is a legit contestant and why is it worth posting?

I approve comments from anonymous sources if the comment adds to the conversation. This can be said of the quote I used, since it provides a little more background on the artist, though the quote itself wasn’t anonymous though. It came from a man named Jon Handel at Boo-Hooray Gallery. Sucklord is a legit contestant by virtue of being chosen by Bravo. Whether the artist is any good though, well, that’s another question.

Well, I admit was most curious to see “who played me”.  No one!  As for Sucklord, I’d never heard of him, but I met him at the finale taping and he….woops, I am contracted to confidentiality.

You’re not a typecast — that job’s reserved for people like Jaclyn.

Sucklord is a Big Hitter in the Designer Art Toy and Low Brow art world. Just ask any serious designer toy collector if they know of Sucklord and the answer will be yes. he is famous for his bootleg style Star Wars themed resin toys. George Lucas even has a few of this Gay Stormtroopers. Every thing about him from his name, to how he dresses and talks is part of his art. What I mean by that is when you buy a piece of his work, you are not just getting the art but the performance as well. Its like going to see a movie and leaving with a prop. Before people put him down you should do some more in depth research.

Jeez, who’s putting him down? We just said he picked a funny name for himself. We were sorta saving the in-depth research for sometime *after* the, uh, very first post on the blog to mention this season of the show.

That said, it’s good to know from someone in the business (for reference, ‘INFO’ is http://twitter.com/#!/BeBopStudios ) that Sucklord’s legit. What’s the toy community make of his (Contemporary) artistic aspirations?

The Designer toy community is a complex place. For those who know him, it seems like it was bound to happen, and he is getting lots of support. Were proud to see one of our own be noticed out side our community. We all like to be famous yes. but its about the art and getting it out there for all to see fame is just the cheery on top. Many toy designers have other jobs so we have huge respect for him since this is his only job.
Theres a youtube video interview with him that can give you more in site into who he is, it’s called Behind the scenes with Sucklord. As well as this West Coast tv show http://vinyladdiction.myx.tv/sucklord/ People love to hate him and hate to love him.

This is amazing and wonderful site. These plants show slight movement when an external magnet is positioned close to them.
Her experimental art practice was developed in an interdisciplinary capacity with the center.
