Why do you diss Colen? I thought he was really honest in his interview. Would you rather he just make up tons of BS like almost every other artist?
I can see why art writers don’t like him because he doesn’t play the game.
In what universe is an artist represented by Gagosian “not playing the game”? If you wanna see resentment in the coverage of Dan Colen – and I think you’d be right to – it’s precisely because he’s played the game so well.
That is true. Â He does seem to be playing the game pretty well. Â But to his credit he does not blow smoke. Â He just says “This painting doesn’t mean anything.” or “I just randomly did this and people like it.” Â
I think lots of artists kind of get used to embellishing their intentions and actions constantly to make them look much more deep and thoughtful then they actually are. Â Â
We have all seen the art critic say to the artist, “Isn’t your work actually about this and this and this and this?” and the artist is like “Yeah, that’s the ticket. Â That’s exactly what I was thinking.” Â (shifty eyes)
I don’t know this guy but he is not doing that and I appreciate it. Â He even admitted that he didn’t realize “blow me” was a play on words! Â Which is hard to believe, but I kind of do believe it because he seems like the kind of guy that is honest to a fault. Â Literally. Â
