This Week In Media Arts: Visual Poetry and Projector Parties

After a week of Miami fairs, a couple of enticing media-arts events promise to help us settle back into a New York state of mind:

A Conversation with Tom Moody
Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts Project Space
323 W. 39 St, 2nd floor, New York, NY 10018
Wednesday, December 7th, 6:30pm

Artist Tom Moody's talk at the EFA on Wednesday night is presented in conjunction with Telefone Sem Fio, an exhibition which invites contemporary poets and artists to reimagine the work of Brazilian visual poet Augusto de Campos. Campos is widely credited with co-founding the concrete poetry movement of the late '50s and was connected to such luminaries as Ezra Pound. Using his visual “remixes” of de Campos's digital material as a starting point, Moody's lecture will draw parallels between the principles of concrete poetry and the ways we use the internet, focusing particularly on the mechanics of sites like Tumblr and Dump.fm. Moody is something of an expert on both.

Bring Your Own Beamer: Games Edition
Postmasters Gallery
459 West 19th Street (at 10th Avenue) New York, NY 10011
Thursday, December 8th, 6-8pm

Despite Jerry Saltz's recent condemnation of audience-participation art shows, we still think that interactivity and integrity can co-exist given the right project. Case in point: artist Rafael Rozendaal's Bring Your Own Beamer series, a string of one-night-exhibitions in which large groups of artists bring their own projectors (“beamers” if you're European) and show whatever content they wish. The resulting salons, which have popped up all over the globe since the project started in 2010, are chaotic (in a good way), communal, and a lot of fun.

For Thursday night's “Games Edition” of the series, which will take place at the Postmasters gallery, organizers have asked that participants bring unusual or obscure video games for others to view and play. The event marks the opening of “Play Station,” a group exhibition of interactive video-game-related works curated by Marcin Ramocki and Paul Slocum, running through December 22nd.

Anyone interested in participating in this BYOB can email an RSVP/proposal to BYOBgamesedition@gmail.com
