We're Going to Open Studios!

by Art Fag City on April 25, 2012 · 3 comments Go See

Be on the lookout for Katie Bell's painting-sculpture hybrids at the Space Program's Open Studios.

This week, AFC staff will be scouring the city for undiscovered masters thanks to the plethora of open studios. Who knows what we'll find, but here's a heads up as to where we'll be and why.

Thursday, April 26th

SVA MFA Fine Arts Open Studios
Opening reception: Thursday, April 26, 5—9 PM
Open studios: Friday, April 27th , 12—8 PM; Saturday, April 28, 12—6 PM
SVA, 133/141 West 21 Street, 8th and 9th floors

SVA primes their MFA students for art world success;  SVA faculty Marilyn Minter curated several of her MFA students into The Virgins Show, the inaugural exhibition at Mauritzio Cattelan and Massimilio Gioni's Family Business. The SVA work shown in that tiny Chelsea storefront included Rebecca Ward's tape sculptures, Andrew Brischler's dirty, rainbow-bright paintings, and Eric Mistretta's motivational balloons. Now that these artists are graduating, and their studios open for view, I can't wait to see who else will be showing in Chelsea sometime soon.

Friday, April 27th

Hunter MFA Open Studios
Opening reception: Friday, April 27th, 6 PM—10 PM
Silent Auction: Friday, April 27th, 6 PM—9 PM
Open studios: Saturday, April 28th, 2 PM—6 PM
Hunter College / Times Square Gallery, 450 West 41st Street

AFC attended Hunter's Fall and Winter thesis exhibition this year, where we saw a whole lot of large, boldly-colored paintings. Some of those students still have studios, so we expect to see more of that, plus whatever else Hunter can throw at us.

And for those of you who are budding collectors, Hunter will hold a silent auction during Friday's reception, from 6 – 9 PM.

Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation Space Program 2012 Open Studios
Opening reception: Friday, April 27, 6—9 PM
Open studios: Saturday, April 28th, 2—6 PM and Sunday, April 29th, 2—5 PM
20 Jay Street, 7th Floor, Room 720, Brooklyn, NY

The Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation's Space Program likes new art. All the works on view have been made by artists while in residence at the Space Program, so you’re likely to have never seen this stuff before. Located in DUMBO, the Space Program provides free studio space to artists-in-residence and hosts open studios in an effort to expose their work to more people. We're in full support of the foundation's long-standing commitment to giving free studio space to artists of all ages.

With this year's 17 artists-in-residence, we're expecting an explosion of color (Miriam Bloom), furry objects (Katie Bell), papier-mâché mayhem (Randy Wray), and shiny canvases (Peter Demos). Randy Wray's been working in New York for a while; he's someone to have on your radar. And if you're getting ready for SEVEN, one of Pierogi's artists, John O'Connor, will be showing off new work.

TOAST (Tribeca Open Artists Studio Tour)
Opening reception: Friday, April 27, 6—9 PM
Open studios: Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, 1—6 PM

Over Bushwick? Visit TriBeCa, a neighborhood crawling with artists who come for the lively cultural discussions, stimulating architecture, and punishingly high rents.

Let’s be real: as AFC wrote earlier this week, most of the art on view at TOAST will be middling, at best. Still, you can’t get this many artists together without something shaking out, so it’s worth the trip for those of you who think you’ve got the eye. Our suggestion? Hit one or two of the big studio buildings, like 368 Broadway or 515 Greenwich, so you can get as many studios in as possible. We’ll be hanging out with AFC friends Marsha Owett and Scott Kilgour at 368 Broadway (207).

I am not sure your experience with TOAST.. but there is a huge range of artists who participated including those who have been featured at the MOMA, as well as major galleries.  I suggest trying TOAST again and really seeing everything it has to offer.

Come and visit studio near FIT.  I am a figurative painter who also works with pastel.  Inspired by “Outsider Art,” Jung and personal symbolism.  Plan to be open every Sunday this month from about 3:00 to 6:00 p.m.  More info at website http://www.josephlawrence-newyork.com
