There’s a bizarre bit of small print on the top of Lingscars.com, a website dedicated to leasing cars at low prices to UK drivers, and today’s Best Link Ever! “I live inside this website Monday to Friday 9am-6pm, to give you the very best service and make your experience a happy one! – I am Ling, accept no substitutes.” Ling is available to chat if you are.
We doubt Ling considers her chatting hours performance art, or her website net art, but we do. Lingscars.com has all the frantic energy and bling of Yvette’s Bridal Shop, and a whole lot more embeddable social software. We’re talking about Ling’s Twitter for one, which is mostly used to retweet mentions of Lingscars, the bulk of which are unintelligible. There’s also Ling’s instant message service, which we’re afraid to try, and a weird video explaining how to use the website. In it, an American chatterbot asks Ling questions, and she tells him he’s stupid because he doesn’t know he has to use the website to lease the car. He also doesn’t know that Americans don’t qualify for leasing if they don’t live in the UK or that a computer is called a computer. To the American, it’s just a “porn machine”.
Those looking to really waste some time should navigate themselves away from places like the testimonials (which is one of the few places on the website that takes itself semi-seriously) and over to the “fun tab”. The landing page includes a quiz you can take to win a car, and no fewer than 38 links to different pages. I spent my time on a page with thoughts on how to monetize Twitterand a section dedicated to showcasing pictures of a nuclear missile launch truck with Ling’s name photoshopped on it. And that’s just scratching the surface. Dig a little deeper and who knows what you’ll find.
