Paradise is exactly like where you are now…only much much better
In the countdown to the Art F City 10th Anniversary Auction honoring artist Laurie Anderson, we’ll be previewing GIFs from our 10th Anniversary GIF and Print Portfolio, a limited-edition suite of prints and GIFs that includes work by Morehshin Allahyari, Jennifer Chan, Faith Holland, Sara Ludy, Claudia Maté, Rosa Menkman, Lorna Mills, Eva Papamargariti, Angela Washko, and Giselle Zatonyl. Today we’re looking at Rosa Menkman.
It’s hard not to think of lips and light when you think of Laurie Anderson. Her iconic video O Superman features her singing with a light in her mouth. Sharkey’s Day pictures her in a white suit, and a blue hat that melds into a background; a white painted outline of her lips moves on the hat as she sings. Even in her commencement speech to SVA students she put a voice modulator in her mouth at one point to sing. Anderson’s work is communication.
So, it’s fitting that Rosa Menkman would chose this as her subject. “Paradise is Exactly Like Where You are Now….Only Much Much Better”, a quote from Anderson’s “Language is a Virus”, animates light moving through lips. Their feminine beauty isn’t quite what what you’d expect from Anderson—she’s more androgynous in style—but it’s a suiting tribute. The flashing electric light shoots through a pair of unmoving lips, as they were a monument themselves. And indeed, in Anderson’s case, they are.
