New Free Courses, Brooklyn Headquarters for BHQFU Spring Semester

BHQF ScreenprintThe Bruce High Quality Foundation University has released its new Spring 2016 curriculum and it looks great. The nonprofit also announced plans for more public programming like another iteration of its book fair in March, big-name lecturers, and open applications for a year-long studio/teaching residency—all of which is free and can be registered for on the BHQF website.  This is what we wish the rest of the art world/education-industrial-complex looked like.

Over the winter break, educational programming moved out of the BHQF’s Manhattan space to their studios in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. This will greatly expand the school’s facilities, though we’ll hopefully still see tips for space-deprived New York artists like the above GIF excerpt from a lesson on exposing silkscreens in your bathroom.

Here is the schedule for the Spring semester (Jan 24 – May 14) the BHQF sent our way:

EXHIBITIONS + PUBLIC PROGRAMS The BHQFU

Book Fair is back in March, and we’ve got tons of other exciting public programs we’ll be announcing throughout the term. After having Betty Tompkins’ REAL ERSATZ exhibition named one of the 10 Best Art Shows of 2015 by Jerry Saltz for Vulture, we’re looking forward to a series of amazing exhibitions this spring.

Join us this Friday, January 15th for the launch of House of Ladosha’s brand new exhibition This is UR Brain, featuring never-before-seen video works, prints, and performances by one of New York’s most exciting artist collectives.

Starting in March, our Curators-in-Residence, the FUG Fellows, are programming a series of exhibitions and events borne out of their personal perspectives on what a university gallery can and should do. Stay tuned–we’ll be announcing their calendar very soon!

STUDIO + TEACHING RESIDENCY PROGRAM

And last, but certainly not least, this spring we’re opening up applications for the MFU Studio + Teaching Residency Program, our cost-free alternative to the MFA Industrial Complex. From what will surely be a highly competitive application pool, BHQFU will select 5 artists who will receive free studio space at the new BHQFU for a period of one year, September 2016 through August 2017. They’ll enjoy all the perks of an MFA: teaching opportunities, studio facilities, peer community, regular critiques, elective course offerings, visiting artists, and more, all completely tuition-free. Know someone interested in pursuing graduate school who doesn’t have $100,000 to blow? Tell them to check out the MFU, going live very soon at bhqfu.org.

About BHQFU

BHQFU is New York City’s freest art school and community space offering a full curricula of critique courses, studio residencies, and special events. The educational programming is enriched by a rigorous exhibition series at the university gallery launched in 2015, FUG. Founded in 2009 by The Bruce High Quality Foundation, BHQFU represents an alternative educational model that treats artistic knowledge as distinct from professional practices, as a knowledge borne from conversations between artists and the histories they make together. BHQFU is a 501(c)3 organization and is completely free for all students. IG: @brucehi
