Today, hundreds of “Democracy Spring” protesters were arrested in front of the U.S. Capitol. They were staging a sit-in to demand the repeal of the Orwellian-named Citizens United ruling and an end to corporate money in politics. By some estimations, this was the most people ever arrested in one day in D.C., and there have been anecdotal reports of the District running out of jail cells.
Let the irony of this situation sink in: hundreds of people were just arrested for peacefully demonstrating against the 1st Amendment rights of corporations.
Remember when freedom of speech culture wars were just about whether or not you could put a cross in pee-pee?
