This GIF of surveillance camera footage showing a luchador and some ostriches exploding into a convenience store has been making the rounds of social media lately, with lots of comments like “only in Mexico!” …Even though this act of convenience-culture crime weirdness would more likely be the work of Florida Man in that other oddly-violent Spring Break destination.
But obviously, this GIF is too weird (and professional) to be true. Reverse Google-Image-Search leads us back to a YouTube post, and the comments section speculates (likely correctly) that this is a piece of “viral marketing” *shudder* for a Mexican gum brand. I have to say, this GIF in no way makes me want to purchase gum or instills any sense of brand recognition… so I guess it’s a fail on that front. But it’s still the GIF of the Day, because it’s both proof that your art school degree can still be fun even if applied to a career in advertising. And it’s one more piece of evidence in the “Gentrification of the internet” panic: they’ve come for our GIFs.
