Jeremy Olson’s black and white GIFs are not inviting. They take viewers through a fictional subterranean labyrinth, and are part of a kickstarter project in which the artist hopes to raise enough funds to produce his 3D artist’s book called GROTTO. It’s worth backing.
The book has been three years in the making. Olson spent that time carefully constructing dioramas and small sculptures in his Ridgewood studio and documenting them. Each has been photographed with the intent of producing 3D images that can be viewed with red/cyan glasses. (It comes with two pairs of 3D glasses. )
This is not a happy-go-lucky collection of interiors. Inspired by science fiction and horror, this creepy book sparks feelings of cascading dread—much like these jittery GIFs. No space feels safe. None of them seem like places you’d want to spend much time in.
Perhaps counter intuitively, that’s why I backed the project. Can’t we all use a coffee table book that will scare the shit out of our guests?
