Common Field, the national visual arts organizing network, is planning another convening for November 2nd – 5th in Los Angeles. I attended their convening in Miami last year, and it was one of the best-spent weekends of my life.
Common Field brings together artists and activists working across a variety of disciplines—you might join a discussion about the challenges of artist-run galleries or curating for the public in a time of accelerated capitalism. Last year we talked about everything from the importance of criticism to the different struggles faced by arts organizations in rural areas or gentrifying cities. Nearly every panel discussion, breakout group, or workshop felt like an eye-opener.
This year, they’ve put out a call for proposals to members for panels, conversation sessions, working groups, workshops, teach-ins, reports from the field, and projects. I’d highly recommend applying. If you’re no already a Common Field member, I’d also recommend joining.
Now more than ever, artist-centric organizations and organizers need to stick together. The amount to be gained from skill-sharing, cooperating, and even just talking is remarkable.
