In the past one might have imagined that were they to break/puncture a photograph that it would shatter like a mirror, or exhibit a literal rupture—i.e., tear like a piece of paper. In the present, a viewer is more likely to imagine that a semi-intelligent semi-transparent liquid would seep out, itself both a lens and a healing balm.

IMG MGMT: New York Conversations (Day One)

by Anton Vidokle on September 27, 2010

New York Conversations is a text film. Shot in a Chinatown storefront converted for this occasion into an improvised kitchen/restaurant, the film documents three days of public conversations between artists, critics, curators, and a free floating public. The talks, lunches, and dinners were organized by Rirkrit Tiravanija, Nico Dockx, and Anton Vidokle in response to an invitation by Brussels-based art journal A Prior to be the subject of their new issue. Instead of commissioning essays or producing artwork to be printed in the journal, the artists decided to rethink the structure by which an art publication is produced and to attempt to do this discursively in a public setting.

[IMG MGMT] Molla Nasreddin: The Magazine That Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve

We first came across the Azeri periodical Molla Nasreddin on a winter day in a second-hand bookstore near Maiden Tower in Baku, Azerbaijan. It was bibliophilia at first sight. Its size and weight, not to mention the print quality and bright colors, stood out suspiciously amongst the meeker and dusty variations of Soviet-style works in old man Elman's place. We stared at Molla Nasreddin and it, like an improbable beauty, winked back.

Is it still necessary to define art by intent and context? The gallery world would have us believe this to be the case, but the internet tells a more mutable story. Contrary to the long held belief that art needs intent and context, I suggest that if we look outside of galleries, we'll find the actions, events and people that create contemporary art with or without the art world's label.

Maybe everyone has a set of memories that repeatedly comes to mind. At least once a day I think of the Wu Tang logo, usually in its original color (yellow). And I’ve always enjoyed the concept of the Clan–there are many members adding to the group's core, each bring something unique. Having been personally affected by a series of Wu related experiences over the years; I've come to wonder what their effect might be. For this reason, I've created an account of those occurrences mostly without attempting to locate significance within individual events. My hope, is that, these memories and experiences will impart the power of the WU.
