A Quiet Opening Night at the PULSE Art Fair

It was a quiet evening at the PULSE art fair on opening night, though dealers remained upbeat nonetheless. “The real opening happens Thursday morning,” Lisa Romero of Schroeder Romero quickly reminded us. That remark was followed up by PULSE Director Cornell DeWitt, who reiterated that “Thursday is always our door buster.” The proceeds from last night’s opening, including ticket sales and a silent auction, will be donated to Lotus House, a shelter for homeless women and infants just a few blocks away from PULSE.

Museums are dealing with higher taxes and dried up federal funds, and the future doesn’t look much better. So says TrendsWatch 2012: Museums and the Pulse of the Future, a report just released by the American Association of Museums (AAM). It’s a good, important read for anyone interested in seeing how museums have been dealing with the economic downturn, and how they’ve been using technology to help buffer the financial strain. One thing is certain: museums are entering a new era.

Pulse: A Lean Affair

by Paddy Johnson on May 5, 2012

Let's get one thing straight: The art shown at Pulse is not our cup of tea. The galleries at this fair tend to specialize in boutique art, cluttered salon-style wall hangings, and cheeseball process-based work, and we're not fans of any of that stuff. That said, the fair has been showcasing this kind of work for years, so there's clearly a market for it even if the crowds haven’t been particularly heavy this weekend.

PULSE Slideshow: Paintings of Horses and a Pen for Collectors

After the slideshows of NADA, SEVEN, and Art Basel, we offer Pulse as a palette-cleanser.  The fair, featuring 90-odd galleries in Miami’s Ice Palace, wasn’t the best we’ve seen. Normally a little better photography at the fair is on view, so it’s a shame Pulse’s strength wasn’t better exhibited. Better luck next time I guess.

Best Lemonade Made From Lemons: Gallerie Maria Veie + Elin Melberg at Pulse

Most of Elin Melberg’s “I wish, I wish, I wish in vain”, was still on a plane as of Friday, so I viewed only a partial installment of the piece at Pulse. As of yesterday though, the work had arrived and was installed at Gallerie Maria Veie’s booth. It’s unlikely I’ll be able to make it over to Pulse once more to see the piece, but the shots from the artist’s blog look good. Keep an eye out for the work.

Trendwatch 2011: Pink Located at The Pulse Art Fair

Pink. I’m going to make this color a trend if it kills me. I like the color and it looks fabulous on any wall. Don’t believe me? I have created a pink grid of findings from the Pulse fair to prove it. A few pink works were located at The Dependent too, but I’m not pushing my luck with that fair. It had blue written all over it.

Pulse Reduces Exhibitor Numbers and Produces a Stronger Fair

by Paddy Johnson on March 5, 2011

Everyone is talking about the beautiful wood floors and reduced exhibitor numbers at Pulse. The floor at least isn’t anything new to New York fairs — LA Art used the same space a couple years ago and I liked it then too — but it gives the fair a much needed makeover. Last year was a total disaster; a leaky building, uneven cement floors, and a seemingly never ending horizon of bad art.
