GIF of the Day: Time_Frame

In honor of the GIF’s 30th anniversary, GIPHY is launching a physical show featuring the work of 30 GIF artists called Time_Frame. 151 artworks and installations from well-known artists such as Lorna Mills, Faith Holland, Carla Gannis, Jelly Gummies, and Robert Beatty will be on view at Wallplay Gallery June 15–22.

As far as exhibitions go, a week is a pretty short time frame. But it looks like there will be as more panel panels, presentations, screenings, artist performances, and workshops during that time than you can shake a stick at, so that’s a positive. We have some concerns about the theme, though, as there’s barely one to speak of. The exhibition text promises to “showcase artists working in and pushing the boundaries of digital art”—so basically it’s a group of artists whose work the curators like.

To be fair, though, the artist list probably isn’t that different than one we’d assemble ourselves. It includes some of the most talented artists working in the field, and has been assembled by GIPHY Arts, Wallplay, Rhizome and Transfer”.

So, even without a theme, we’re excited to look at the show. A few samples of what’s in store below.

This is so cool. Adam Pendleton, Rashid Johnson, Ellen Gallagher and Julie Mehretu have pooled their money and purchased the birthplace of Nina Simone—a 660 square foot house in Tryon, N.C. Plans for the structure haven’t been fully formulated yet, but for now at least it’s going to be preserved. [The New York TImes]

A new building in the Lower East Side has entered the NYC affordable housing lottery, offering studio apartments from $519. Apply now. [Curbed]

The Orange County Museum of Art had plans to finance a new location in Costa Mesa through a real estate deal involving luxury condos on land it owns in pricey Newport Beach. Now it’s in a world of political drama. Southern California NIMBYs make the West Village look like a tabula rasa. [Los Angeles Times]

Here’s one museum personnel saga that’s more scandalous than the Met’s recent shakeup: Munich’s Haus der Kunst might’ve been infiltrated by Scientologists. Yep. There’s a full-on panic over a staff administrator who may have a secret agenda. In Germany, Scientology is considered a cult and they take its shadowy mechanizations very, very seriously. Well, Baltimore is getting a new piece of public art. The prone “Homeless Jesus” was just blessed with holy water one block from my (Michael’s) house. The irony of this is that the very Basilica where it was christened has a terrible track record of landgrabs and demolition of housing in its immediate vicinity. Jesus actually has a pretty big house, now with gardens and a parking garage where once stood apartment buildings. Lots of others in the neighborhood, not so much. [ABC 2 News]

In the same neighborhood, artists are fundraising to rehab a group of buildings for performance, studio, and affordable live/work space. The project is called Le Mondo, and is an ambitious example of artist-owned, artist-run real estate. This is a good project to support. [Crowdrise]

More good news for the markets of the insanely wealthy, Sotheby’s recorded the highest total for any London sale yesterday evening with a £195 million ($241 million) sale of 54 lots of Impressionist, Modern and Surrealist art. Their estimate was £150/180 million. [Baer Faxt]

Speaking of the uber wealthy Pace Gallery broke ground in Chelsea yesterday as they begin construction on their new 8 story, 75,000 square foot building at 540 West Twenty-fifth Street. For reference, that’s a little under half the size of the Whitney Museum’s building on Gansevoort, which is 220,000 square feet. Unlike the Whitney, though, which is a museum built to house and display treasures that belong to the public, Pace is building a sales showroom and offices for the rich. [Baer Faxt]

Yesterday we expressed disappointment in the lack of artwork addressing the Trump regime in the Armory Show’s curated section. But apparently plenty of gallerists didn’t shy away from bringing politically confrontational work. Good. This is a trend that was evident at Zona MACO last month, and hopefully one that gains momentum through the art fair circuit. [ARTnews]

Lorna Mills gives good interviews. On the subject of accreditation and GIFs she says, “I wonder if any artists working online think so much about ownership. They tend to think more about credit for the things they have done. Ownership also suggests some sort of control over the work, and we know that isn’t always possible online. Transfer Gallery published a GIF catalogue of my work recently and I think that serves as a more official form of accreditation.” More Lorna Mills please. [Hyperallergic]

Ann Pfoser Darby, member of Queens Community Board 4, allegedly said during a meeting about safety improvements to 111th street, “Once Trump removes all the illegals from Corona, there won’t be anybody to ride bike lanes.” People are calling for Darby’s removal from the board. I’d like to point out that if all the immigrants left Queens, there wouldn’t be anyone to use any infrastructure in the borough. [Streetsblog]

ONLINE PREMIERE: “Ways of Something – Episode 3”

With John Berger’s death this month, the online premiere of Lorna Mills’ “Ways of Something, 3” feels particularly poignant. While Mills’s “Ways of Something” wasn’t conceived strictly as an update, as 117 person re-interpretation it effectively functions as such. To complete this piece, Mills invited over 100 artists to remake all four parts of Berger’s 1972 BBC series “Ways of Seeing”, minute by minute. Each artist was given 60 seconds of video—doled out on a first come first serve basis—with the sole condition that they would need to retain the text used in captioning. What they did to the captioning font, the visuals, the sound, was entirely up to them.

The result is almost certainly the largest video exquisite corpse in existence. Similar to the first Surrealist conceived exquisite corpse drawings, where each half is made blind of the other, each artist creates a minute without knowing what will come before or after it.

The Paley Center for Media is hosting an exhibition of all Star-Trek-themed art from 50 artists to celebrate the show’s 50th anniversary. It looks like most of it is the kitsch you would expect, but I would totally own this thread portrait of Spock. [Space.com]

Printed Web Founder Paul Soulellis talks with internationally acclaimed GIF artist Lorna Mills. I love this interview, mostly because Mills is so fucking smart. When asked about the relationship of her work to cinema, Mills replies, “I am looking for something else. In the past I’ve described this something else as the particular and peculiar expanding to universals that, at an alarming rate, contract right back to the particular and peculiar—basically, constant oscillation punctuated by the odd abrupt rhythm.” It’s the most precise description of her GIFs I can imagine. Artist Malcolm Peacock’s latest piece involves a tour of a park that was once a segregation-era pool. Today the site is marked by a somewhat-forgotten memorial from MacArthur “Genius” Grant recipient Joyce J. Scott. Peacock’s work will touch on death, race, and more. The Sacramento Jeff Koons debate rages on over Facebook. Tim Foster, a local writer and musician, notes that all those complaining about the philanthropic money that went to purchasing a public art work by Jeff Koons should have been spent on local artists, don’t have a history of supporting the arts themselves. Two years ago, The Crest, a 25 year old theatre known for supporting the arts, was pushed out of their home due to a landlord who hoped to make more money off the real estate. GIF of the Day: Ann Hirsch’s Facebook Nose

Those who missed the screening of NARGIFSUS at Transfer Gallery last Saturday have a second chance to view the show. It’s also being presented at NewHive as a web exhibition. Curated by Brooklyn based artist and curator Carla Gannis and Berlin based curator Tina Sauerländer, the show explores self-portraiture in the form of GIFs.

As a show, it’s fairly expansive. Themes such as bodily transformation via technology or just plain magic dominate while GIFs of people and things other than the artist play a second favorite in the exhibition. The amount of time and effort each artist put into their GIFs varies quite a bit, but as a subject that’s generally under-explored in the art GIF making world, it’s an important show.

The above self-portrait as Ann Hirsch as Pinocchio, the wooden puppet whose nose grows when lying, may be the strongest work in the exhibition. Here, Hirsch gestures to the construction of persona via social media and even her own practice which has long involved semi-fictional narratives, and participation in reality shows. Oddly enough, the piece reads as more honest than the Pinocchio’s nose might suggest, in so far as its admission of fallacy amounts to truth. That’s an accolade worth celebrating.

Wednesday Links: Canadians Can’t Stop Exporting Landscapes

Canadian artist Lorna Mills gets a write up in CBC for her Times Square billboard installation. Love this excerpt: “I’m a Canadian artist and I’ve just put a mountain in Times Square? That kind of made me laugh,” Mills tells CBC Arts, erupting with infectious laughter, appropriately enough. “We just never go wrong when we export charismatic landscapes.” True, true. Can we all talk some more about the Group of Seven, please? [CBC Arts]

The art world is a hot bed of incestuous relationships and intrigue. Some commercial galleries are complaining that museums expect them to sponsor shows that include work by artists they represent. But museums say their expenses are sky high and can’t afford to launch the shows without this support. These financial realities may explain why nearly a third of the major solo exhibitions at museums in the United States between 2007 and 2013 featured artists represented by just five galleries. As you might have guessed those galleries were the big ones: Gagosian, Pace, Marian Goodman, David Zwirner and Hauser & Wirth. [New York Times]

Love this: The Rauschenberg Foundation will ease copyright restrictions on work by Robert Rauschenberg. Among other things this means royalty-free use of his images to museums and educational institutions who use Rauschenberg’s art in promotional materials. [Culture: High & Low]

This Week’s Must-See Art Events: Avoiding Anything Armory Edition

Art-fair haters rejoice! The Armory Week Fairs are upon us, but there is art to see and events to attend that don’t require traveling through the halls of a convention center. Take the launch of Lorna Mills’ monthly GIF presentation on the electronic billboards of Times Square as part of Times Square Arts, or the opening of the Artist’s Institute’s new uptown home, which will kick off its six month season focused on the inimitable Hilton Als. Both take place outside of an art fair booth and in the real world!

Looking to escape the fairs this weekend? Flux Factory launches the Fung Wah Biennial, presenting the work of artists on the Chinatown bus routes. This Saturday, the destination is Boston, so if you’re looking for a post-Armory ride, this might be the ticket. (But act quick: as of writing, ten tickets are left.)
