The U.S. military’s marching band budget is almost three times as large as the annual sum being allocated to the National Endowment for the Arts. That’s $437 million dollars going to renditions of the Star-Spangled Banner and an Air Force rock band called Max Impact. Seriously, check out that rock band link. Iranian pop artist, Parviz Tanavoli, had his passport confiscated by authorities in Tehran this weekend. He was scheduled to attend a lecture in London that focused on his book, “European Women in Persian Houses.” As of July 4th, Tanavoli still did not know why he wasn’t allowed to travel. Abbas Kiarostami, director of great films like “Where Is The Friends Home?” and “Close-Up,” as well as a large body of photography and installation work has died at the age of 76. He was reportedly undergoing treatment for cancer. [Al Jazeera]
Pieces of Christo’s Floating Piers have already appeared on eBay following the closing of the piece on July 3rd. The work is intended to be recycled but it seems some industrious person managed to snag a few chunks. The special socks that visitors wore are also available for $1000. [artnet News]

Pirates are now using YouTube’s 360° panorama feature to hide full-length films from the streaming video services automated content id systems. The resulting videos have an odd, online gallery showroom quality. While it’s a clever trick, as it is, this probably won’t become a widespread problem because it just looks weird. [Kill Screen]
Wow, you might want to think twice before co-signing for a student loan in New Jersey. Specifically, if the student dies the loans will not be forgiven. One bankruptcy lawyer describes the program as “state-sanctioned loan sharking.” [The New York Times]
While the verdict is still out on whether public interest will be able to sustain the new wave of virtual reality, Japan’s first VR porn festival was an overwhelming success. Monday Links: After the Floods

In the wake of the worst flooding Paris has seen in three decades, the Grand Palais exhibition hall reopened as floodwaters slowly recede. The Louvre, which had to move 250,000 works from their basement storage last week at risk of flooding, won’t reopen until Wednesday. [CBC]
St Petersburg’s State Hermitage Museum has unveiled a Rubens painting unseen for the past 80 years. “The Resurrection of Christ” only began to be restored in 2012 — it had become warped and darkened over the years — when the institution opened its own restoration center. [The Art Newspaper]
The new website for the Canadian Center for Architecture (CCA) is gorgeous. The navigation has shifted away from prioritizing on the front page programming at CCA’s physical space toward a curatorial framework that brings new and old materials on contemporary issues in architecture. “Can a museum be a magazine?” asks Cincinnati Art Museum curator Brian Sholis. “Pushes the Walker Art Center model further.” [@briansholis]
The rise of the surveillance age has inevitably led to a new cottage industry: stickers and plastic slides designed to cover up the front-facing cameras of our laptops, phones and even televisions. [Guardian]

Over 100 Artists and Small Businesses Forced Out of Gowanus Buildings

Over 100 Gowanus-based artists and small businesses are the latest victims of New York’s rampant developer-led gentrification. The newest displacement involves three adjacent buildings at 94 and 98 9th street, and 75 and 75A 10th Street and possibly more. Many artists and businesses have been told they must vacate as early as October 31st.

A Pledge to Mixed Greens Gallery: I’m Going to All Your Future Shows

After 16 years of operation, the Chelsea-based gallery Mixed Greens will close its doors when its lease runs out at the end of the year. The gallery, which was founded by philanthropist and collector Paige West in 1999, had an unusual beginning: it first launched as a website dedicated to promoting the work of emerging artists. In 2005, after much success online, it opened a physical space at the request of the many artists they promoted.

The gallery has a special place in the hearts of those at AFC. Paige was part of the early blogging community we, too, were a part of, and she blogged enthusiastically about emerging art (she was talking about Alex Da Corte in 2008), overheard conversations at fairs (which were sometimes horrific), and, of course, collecting (she wrote a book on the topic). Then, when Mixed Greens opened its physical space, it launched its own blog, The Pit, which is run by the staff and for a time linked frequently to other publications, including our own. It was here, that the gallery made their announcement of closing. (My favorite posts revealed their obsession with sharks. I approve.)

More on Carnegie Mellon University’s dismissal of curator Astria Suparak. The CMU student paper The Tartan, has come out with their report, and they found one art history professor who admits that Suparak was too focused on “social critique” and a student who thinks she had a good “work ethic.” [The Tartan]
U.K. copyright law will change April 6th. A new exception will allow artists to use copyrighted material for the purpose of parody. [The Art Newspaper]
The 67th wealthiest billionaire in the world is suing Larry Gagosian and Gagosian Gallery for fraud. That billionaire, Ronald Perelman, is claiming fraud over a Jeff Koons “Popeye” sculpture he purchased for $4 million. He’s an unhappy customer to say the least; the plaintiffs allege that Gagosian manipulates prices for the artists he represents. “The court has affirmed that we have a valid fraud claim against Mr. Gagosian based on his unfair dominance of the art market,” Christine Taylor, a spokeswoman for Perelman, said in an e-mail. It’s official: Our nation’s capital will get a new museum, the Institute for Contemporary Expression. Let’s hope someone decides to brainstorm a few more names before the museum actually opens. [Washington City Paper]
