Rhizome Making a Killing on Paddle8

Anyone else notice that Rhizome’s four-piece Paddle8 auction has already raised over $35,000? The auction supports their Seven on Seven Conference, for which they seem to have so shortage of support. That’s in no small part due to Petra Cortright’s “krakow_1.psd”, a digital painting on aluminum estimated at $3,500. The top bid for that painting is currently at $17,500 after 29 bids. The auction still has two days left.

Monday Links: Catch Up Edition

by Paddy Johnson on April 22, 2013
  • Mobile Homestead is a public art space and a faithful replica of the suburban Detroit childhood home of the artist Mike Kelley. Randy Kennedy describes the space as a “free-form community center”, which can be used as a cite for garage bands, an exhibition venue, or a benefit space. The space will open May 11, thanks to the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, Mike Kelley, and a host of other workers. Watch it. Kelley thought it would be one of the most important things he ever did. [NYTimes]

In an AFC exclusive interview, Ryan Trecartin debuts riverthe.net for the first time to the public. Known for his movies full of tripped out characters drawing much of their language from the Internet, artist Ryan Trecartin is an unlikely developer. He doesn’t know how to program. He spends all his time making movies. This hasn’t changed, though he is the driving creative force behind a new chat-routlette-esque platform conceived last spring in collaboration with tumblr Founder David Karp at Rhizome’s Seven on Seven conference. Dubbed riverthe.net (formerly Project Ten and currently at the temporary url riverofthe.net), the online tool strings together 10 second videos uploaded by users through tag alone. Only three tags can be given to any video.
