The LA Times has to be kicking themselves now for letting go of Jori Finkel. She and Randy Kennedy break the news that LA MOCA will select Dia’s Philippe Vergne as its new director. Questions about his fundraising prowess linger, but he’ll certainly be able to help build back the museum’s credibility (and hopefully their staff). [The New York Times]
Nobody tells a story like Tony Fitzpatrick. In this issue of Dime Stories, Fitzpatrick recalls the five years the famed dance club The Limelight lasted in Chicago. He says it didn’t last because unlike New Yorkers, who are willing to stand in line for hours just for the privilege of spending their money, Chicagoans have better things to do with their time. Walter Robinson observes how, in galleries and the auction houses, 80s artstars (Julian Schnabel, Eric Fischl, and David Salle, among others) are back. He’s not exactly sure why that is, other than “now that it’s history, it can begin its endless comeback.” [Artspace]

By now, you’ve probably heard about the controversial whitewashing over “graffiti mecca” 5Pointz in Long Island City. Gothamist found at least one person who doesn’t think the mecca’s end is so bad; the works were “safe.” As recognized by the original agreement, the building didn’t allow political, religious, or X-rated graffiti. Rob “Still the Mayor of Toronto” Ford’s TV show debuted this week; it was cancelled soon after the first episode. [Slatest]
The Animal staff go to Toronto to buy crack and investigate the Rob Ford situation. They manage to buy crack, fact-check their crack and speak to an actual crack smoker about the mayor’s seemingly out-of-control antics. “It’s embarrassing. I’m embarrassed. Even as a smoker, I can’t see how you’re going to sit down with a bunch of people and say you want help for the city.” She blows out enough smoke to change the color of the room and continues. “No one is going to take him seriously.” [Animal]
“The selfie is a revolution against the camera’s tyranny. It puts the person being photographed in control of the photograph. It is an art of freedom.” Surprisingly, the Guardian’s curmudgeonly art critic Jonathan Jones comes out swinging for the selfie in art. He may have confused “freedom” with “pointing a camera at your face.” But maybe there is a selfie revolution, with liberty and justice for all. [The Guardian]

The Times has run two stories on William Kentridge. He’s closing an opera at the Metropolitan Opera, and opening a show at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. I get that these are big institutions, but with so many artists working in the city without coverage, couldn’t they have rolled this into one feature? (His show opens Tuesday.) Let the Frieze reports begin. Take one: Jonathan Jones is upset that Frieze Masters takes “the entire history of art and turns it into an elitist shopping mall.” He then complains that the fair turns art into congealed money. To complain that an art fair is just for the rich is to fail to understand the point of an art fair, which is to sell art to rich people. But the actual review, which discusses fakes, substandard Brueghels, bad medieval paintings is more substantive than the usual crap Jones churns out. [The Guardian]
Adrian Searle thinks Frieze has better lighting and wider aisles this year, and while the art hasn’t improved much he says galleries seem to be trying harder. (Not sure how “trying harder” was determined, but okay.) Oh, and Jennifer Rubell continues to make bad art. [The Guardian]

He’s rewriting an old story from four months ago about how everyone has to participate in art fairs, and middle-tier galleries are getting squeezed out of the market. Dealer Gordon VeneKlasen from Michael Werner Gallery is a primary source for the article because what? This is a dealer who’s been around for 21 years, and very few people in the contemporary scene seem to know who he is (us included).
