Intellect and Instinct: Painting the Void and Exhibit, A at the MCA

The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago has been on a roll recently. Rashid Johnson’s show “Message to Our Folks” was positively received this summer, as was their blockbuster “Skyscraper: Art and Architecture Against Gravity.” The MCA is still riding this wave of these successes with two massive exhibitions that are in many ways at opposite ends of the spectrum: the cool authoritarian aesthetic of Goshka Macuga’s “Exhibit, A” on one side, and the gritty, material anarchy of “Destroy the Picture: Painting the Void, 1949-1962” on the other.

Museum news junkies are getting their fix right now with a new expose on the ongoing MOCA saga. All the characters—Jeffrey Deitch, Eli Broad, and Paul Schimmel—seem to have covert motives, personal vendettas, and a screwball sense of the way the world really works. If only it had more sexual intrigue, then it’d be like Downton Abbey. [Vanity Fair]
“Monopoly’s been very good to me. Very, very good.” That’s a catchphrase from a vintage Monopoly commercial that serves to highlight how easily pleased we used to be; before now, everyone thought Monopoly was basically complete, despite offering no refuge from capitalism and requiring that the least popular player role-play an iron. Today, that changes. No longer will we be satisfied with whatever cut-rate movie-themed Reversi remake Big Board Game decides to sell; in the age of the internet, our voices will be heard in a truly democratic forum, and they will say: “Lol it should have a cat.” Alex Abad-Santos, at The Atlantic Wire, has been comparing the exit polls, and finds some evidence of vote tampering. In news of the weird: a Michelangelo sculpture will head to jail. Supporters believe the sculpture “will have a positive impact on the psyches of the inmates”. [The Art Newspaper]
We’re excited for the February issue of The Brooklyn Rail. Guest Editor Martha Schwendener asked 50 critics, scholars, activists, and writers how they’d like to reimagine their field and make it better—in just a few hundred words. From the looks of it, we’ve got a lot of reading to do today. [The Brooklyn Rail]
Another lengthy piece we’re keen to read in full: Christian Viveros-Faune’s interview with octogenarian art critic and historian Irving Sandler about the intersections between the art market and art practice. If you’re on the fence about whether the market has any bearing on the art we see (Ed. Note: WHO ARE YOU?) , maybe Viveros-Faune will convince you otherwise; he’s come to realize financial speculation “affects the way art is made, understood, and, ultimately, experienced.” [The Village Voice]

Poof! Labor Day came and went, and now summer is over. Before we go full force into fall, AFC wanted to take a trip down memory lane by highlighting our favorite posts of the last few months. Thursday Links! Meaningless Gossip Edition

Everyone’s gone Olympics mad, including British artists Gillian Wearing and Susan Philipsz. This week, Philipsz recorded herself tediously humming the national anthems from Grenada, Ethiopia, Russia, Bahrain, USA, Great Britain, Nigeria and Jamaica simultaneously, and Wearing took this crappy photograph of Usain Bolt after his 100m win, to which Guardian readers responded: “Don’t give up the day job, Gillian.” Yeah, we agree. Is Bravo doing something icky again? The anonymous gallery girl behind the Gallery Talk NY Tumblr claims she’s not affiliated with the show, but we think her Gallery Girls-friendly blog is a marketing ploy. (Gallery Talk NY)
The MOCA crisis has taken to battling in the Facebook arena: board member Daniel Loeb commented on Paul Schimmel’s Facebook page, saying that “it might have been time for him to move on.” Schimmel responded with a vague status update. (via @TylerGreenDC)
Michigan might be the worst state for arts funding in the country—that’s why the Detroit Institute of Arts proposed a property tax to prevent the museum from falling into financial mud. ArtServe Michigan just came out with an infographic on how the arts fund job growth. Isn’t this just common sense? Well, I guess Michigan politicans aren’t easily convinced. (Hyperallergic)
e-flux just came out with a new website to promote the .art domain! You have until August 12th to tell ICANN why e-flux should be able to administer the future of art-related internet real-estate. (e-flux)
Seems like Pussy Riot has gained support from a few famous faces. Madonna performed in Moscow on Tuesday, and dedicated a few encouraging words to the Pussy Riot case, aided by flashcards. “I’m blessed to be from a country where I have the right to express my own opinion!”, she shouted to her applauding audience. Long live Madonna! German singer Peaches is currently writing a song called “Free Pussy Riot”. Can’t wait to hear it. We really hope it’s better than this one. [YouTube, The Independent]
Light Industry will pay tribute to the life and films of Chris Marker by mounting an all-day screening of his films on August 26th. The event will close with a midnight screening of his 2004 film, The Case of the Grinning Cat. As we know, he sure did like cats. (Light Industry)
If you’ve ever thought art speak sounds like Esperanto, then you’ll be in good company with Alix Rule and David Levine. For their “International Art English” (IAE) project at Triple Canopy the duo scoured e-flux press release archives to analyze that messy thing we call art talk. Oh, then they did something smart by feeding those press releases through Sketch Engine software to find patterns and trends. Over at ARTINFO, Kyle Chayka offers an insightful take on how IAE applies to my nomination for 2012’s most overused noun: “curator.” (ARTINFO, Triple Canopy)

MOCA Will Create an Endowed Chief Curator Position

In a letter to trustees, MOCA’s executive committee announced it would steer its curatorial department in a new direction by hiring a chief curator to replace Paul Schimmel. According to the letter first published on Bloomberg, MOCA will form a search committee once “the necessary financial commitments [are] in place for a special curatorial fund to endow the position.” The change follows public outcry against MOCA’s prior decision to leave the chief curator position unfilled, thereby consolidating curatorial duties to Jeffrey Deitch, the museum’s director.

An Essay About Nothing by Eli Broad

That Sunday L.A. Times op-ed by MoCA Trustee Eli Broad does not sit well with me. The whole piece is supposed to explain Chief Curator Schimmel’s departure, but how it does so is up to the reader to piece together. Broad lays out exactly ten paragraphs of history, none of which have anything to do with Schimmel. Mostly, the piece serves to tell us that Broad wasn’t around when the financial crisis started in the 90’s, though he has been around to oversee its rebound. Broad points to the great progress MoCA’s made; It has built its endowment back up and increased its attendance numbers. He fails to mention that this year MoCA put nothing towards its endowment, and offers no context for the shows he tells us lost money.
