Maybe it’s just this coldfront, or our upcoming show with TSA, that has me yearning for Miami. But the first time I saw this GIF from Tumblr user 550am, I saw it as a cheery, South Beach-esque postmodern plaza getting planted with a palm tree. Immediately, though, it reveals itself to be a product of the contemporary postmodern condition rather than the postmodern landscape design of the 1980s. The palm is boxed-up with packaging advertising “100% GMO” and “Premium!” and disappears to be replaced by yet another tree in an endless assembly line.
This brings to mind the horrible news that the palm oil industry is rapidly deforesting the rainforests that used to cover the planet’s second-largest island.
Really, fellow humans? Are we so lazy that we’d rather sacrifice the rainforest (and by extension, our planet’s atmosphere) than have to stir our own goddamn peanut butter?
How about we stop boxing-up the world’s tree canopy so there’s a chance we can all enjoy a not-submerged South Beach for many years to come?
Remember, choosy moms choose GIFs, not JIF.
