As 2015 comes to a close, the internet is awash with “top 10” and “best of” lists. But one art world metric of success that’s under-discussed (and nearly-universally sought) is gallery representation. So we’ve asked past and present AFC editors to weigh in on the artists that commercial galleries haven’t snagged exclusive contracts with yet—despite acclaim from critics, museums, and audiences. In the interest of gender parity in the notoriously sexist world of gallery representation, we’re each selecting one male-identified and one female-identified artist.

Halloween is here! The art world’s favorite holiday. If you aren’t busy working on a last minute costume, head to American Medium Tuesday night to see AFC’s friend Brenna Murphy and pick up her new book, Domain~Lattice. Wednesday night, go to the New Museum’s insanely fun Halloween party.  Then on Thursday, head to Bortolami, where Tom Burr’s installations and photographs serve as a haunted house channeling the ghosts of Chelsea’s gayer, sleazier past. But really, the scariest thing in New York City this week is the NSFW flyer for Nolan Hendrickson’s Halloween, uh, opening at Ramiken Crucible.

Let’s not sugarcoat this: Chelsea has become a glittering straight jacket for any artist who actually wants to experiment. The collector market tethers these artists to calculated production where artistic value and cost never seem to go hand in hand. This makes it hard to get too excited about opening night in Chelsea, and in fact, but for a handful of openings, we’re not. This is what we recommend.
