Vanity Fair compiles a list of the six “greatest” living artists. They polled 100 “art-world worthies” to find that the greatest consists of, for the most part, very old white men: Gerhard Richter tops the list, followed by Jasper Johns, Richard Serra, Bruce Nauman, Cindy Sherman, and Ellsworth Kelly. Great Britain has entered into a kangaroo hostage situation. The National Maritime Museum has kept two paintings on view by George Stubbs since 1773, the first ever painting of a kangaroo and a dingo, respectively; however, these paintings weren’t actually owned by the museum, and in 2012, a buyer—from overseas!—purchased the two paintings. In the time since, the museum has rallied for “saving these for the nation,” and just this week, they received a £1.5m donation from someone who lives in Great Britain to do so. Go Patriotism! Tel Aviv based curator Maayan Shellef and artists Eran Hadas and Gal Eshel have invented yet another entity who doesn’t get you. His name is Frankie the Documentary Robot, and he interviews people about their emotions, attempting to ‘learn’ what it means to be human. Frankie is taking his futile attempts at empathy on the road and will arrive in Linz, Austria next month, for the Ars Electronica festival. [Vimeo]

The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts is de-acquisitioning one of its two Hopper paintings to raise money for its contemporary art fund. The painting’s sale will quintuple PAFA’s acquiring budget, with 75% of that money going towards buying new work and 25% towards filling gaps in its historical collection. [The New York Times]

Last week artist Anthony Antonellis had a chip implanted in his hand so he could distribute his net art with greater ease. This blog collects some of the reactions around the web to the piece. He’s rewriting an old story from four months ago about how everyone has to participate in art fairs, and middle-tier galleries are getting squeezed out of the market. Dealer Gordon VeneKlasen from Michael Werner Gallery is a primary source for the article because what? This is a dealer who’s been around for 21 years, and very few people in the contemporary scene seem to know who he is (us included). Massive Links: The Most Important School Ever

We love Julia Halperin’s piece on Avenues, a new K-12 private school opening in Chelsea this fall, even though the content scares us slightly. The school will have a focus on contemporary art; among the amenities are a private, growing art collection, visits from working artists, printmaking facilities at Pace Prints and, most importantly, iPads for all.
