GIF of the Day: “David Bowie IS”

One day of mourning David Bowie is not enough. His music and performances are too important to let him go. As such, I’ve downloaded as many GIFs as possible from the animated GIF show Lorna Mills curated for the Art Gallery of Ontario’s 2013 “David Bowie is” exhibition . The exhibition included over 15 artists from countries all around the world.(Rea McNamara discussed her GIFs for the show yesterday.) Some of the GIFs, now, look oddly prescient.

Sadly, we never reviewed the GIF show—it was up for one night only—but we did get to see the traveling exhibition. We weren’t happy with it.

Palpable Momentum Felt at EXPO Chicago

When EXPO Chicago started in 2012, the popular opinion was that President and Director Tony Karman had five years to make this fair great. If he couldn’t, it was likely dead in the water. This weekend marked year three of the midwest fair, and exhibitors and attendees remarked on the palpable momentum. 19 Chicago galleries participated, the highest number yet, and EXPO continued to draw galleries from around the world, including repeat exhibitors like New York’s CRG Gallery who has been on board all three years, and Diana Lowenstein Gallery of Miami, who has been exhibiting at Chicago fairs every year since the 90s.

Just based on the thirty-nine websites, GIFs and videos on her site, you might think she’s well into her late thirties. Her resume is equally long, listing exhibitions at MoMA, The Art Gallery of Ontario, and Wayne State University.

Slideshow: The Best and Worst at Art Toronto

Over the course of the last two days, we’ve repeatedly been asked how we liked Art Toronto. Yesterday we reported on the organization and business of the fair, which is remarkable mostly for its utter lack of ambition. We didn’t like that. Today, we’ve put together a slideshow to give readers a better sense of what’s at the fair. We didn’t like that either. And from what we hear, there’s a lot missing, too! Jessica Bradley’s absence this year was just one established gallery of many who was repeatedly mourned while we were on site.

Long story short, there’s not a hell of a lot worth looking at. We collected the best (and worst) of it for you regardless though, because that’s just how we roll. Brace yourself for images and commentary after the jump.

The Toronto International Film Festival: Day One

This morning, I took a look at James Franco’s latest project, Spring Breakers. I went in with low expectations, due to Franco’s questionable art-making practice and the “plot”: four college students head out to Miami to get fucked up, or, as is repeated ad nauseam throughout the movie, find themselves. It’s way too long for what it is.

It’s part of the Toronto International Film Festival, better known as TIFF. To give readers a sense what this festival is like, let me begin by saying that TIFF has exceeded 260,000 attendees for the last few years, which is approximately 190,000 more visitors than Art Basel Switzerland. It is enormous, and it’s considered the world’s most important film festival next to Cannes.
