I’ve never been able to come up with a top ten list of exhibitions; big, lasting ideas don’t always take place in art on the wall. So, keep that in mind with my best-of list; there’re exhibitions, sure, but my main requirement was picking “art” that I keep coming back to time-and-time again.
Fuck yeah! The Bruce High Quality Foundation University—a one-room schoolhouse located just above a bodega—returns this fall. The BHQFU is like grad school, but it’s mostly free, with classes offered on nights and weekends. In a lot of ways it’s better than grad school—instructors are accessible, and unbounded by university bureaucracy, they end up crafting courses straight out of a dream notebook.
The Bruces might not appeal to everyone, but their work is for everyone. Regrettably, the exhibition does not show this side of the Bruces, and it doesn’t do justice to the foundation’s varied projects, the more interesting of which cannot be represented in this, or possibly any, exhibition.
