Is gentrification inevitable? Or is that just a myth perpetrated by greedy real estate developers and politicians who seek to gain from residents’ fear and inaction? The answer is undoubtedly the latter if Sunday’s Brooklyn Community Forum on Anti-Gentrification and Displacement is any indication.

The anti-gentrification conference shattered the notion that gentrification is a “done deal,” as panel moderator and Director of Hunter College Center for Community Planning and Development Tom Angotti described. Held at the Brooklyn Museum, activists and community organizers, instead, offered a glimmer of hope for displaced and threatened communities.

The Victoria and Albert Museum—arguably the world’s preeminent design institution—will be displaying one of those 2004 Juicy Couture velour tracksuits with the rhinestones on the butt. No, this isn’t an exhibition focused on atrocities—it’s about underwear through the ages. [Paper]

Good news out of the Miami gallery diaspora—many of the artists and gallerists fleeing gentrification in Wynwood have decided to buy their own real estate in Little Haiti, hopefully avoiding a repeat of the rent inflation and displacement of the last decade. [The New York Times]

Thursday Links: Recessionary Skyscrapers You’ll Never See

One of the worst casualties of the recession? Architecture. Here’s a look at 15 Rem Koolhaas/OMA designs that were never completed. Many of them are located in the NYC area, and certainly would’ve injected some of the classy eccentricism the city’s architecture was once known for back into the streetscape and skyline. [ArchDaily]
After losing thousands of works in Hurricane Sandy, Printed Matter has relocated to a bigger, flood-resistant space with the help of volunteers and donations from artists. [The New York Times]
This is totally click-baity, but this Toronto subway map from the future — 2021, to be precise, when the Eglinton Crosstown LRT finally opens — is pretty exciting. The new transit line will finally replace the bus service for a huge swath of the city’s uptown with rail transit, and hopefully bring Toronto’s public transport into the 21st century. [NOW Magazine]

Curators, according to Michael Govan, are cheap dates. At a contemporary art collecting panel this week at the Frick, the LACMA director advised collectors that they were more likely to get free advice from curators than art advisors. Wednesday Links: Preserving Taco Bell and Tattoos of the Dead

An important piece of western cultural patrimony is being preserved for posterity: the first Taco Bell has been spared demolition and is being trucked 45 miles to the company’s headquarters in Irvine, California. Fans can even watch its journey from designated Taco Bell locations along the route. [Los Angeles Magazine]

National Geographic has an interactive graphic that shows what the Manhattan skyline will look like when all the planned and under-construction buildings are complete. Observations: until the past decade or so, relatively few buildings in the city were actually over 700 feet. Soon, the Chrysler Building is going to look tiny. [National Geographic]

Prior to the 1979 revolution, Iranian Empress Farah Pahlavi assembled one of the greatest collections of modern and contemporary European and American art. After the royal family fled, the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art’s collection miraculously survived thanks to protection by art enthusiast Firouz Shabazi Moghadam and others who guarded the Warhols, Gaughins, Pollocks, and Rothkos. Now that Iran’s international relations are improving, there’s hope that the museum can take its rightful place among the great art institutions of the world. Europe’s royal palaces are given an unlikely second life as exhibition space for contemporary art [BBC]

File this under disgusting and awesome: The National Association for the Preservation of Skin Art (NAPSA) offers people with tattoos the chance to preserve their skin after they die, even framing posthumously removed tattoos as one would a painting. Someone do this to me [Michael] after I die, please.[WTVR]

Hyperallergic has a recap on last night’s protest of the Brooklyn Real Estate Summit at the Brooklyn Museum. The story here: lots of artists came out, which has been an issue in the past and there was real community engagement in the issues during the protest. [Hyperallergic]

In related protest news, The Guerilla Girls have declared war on “cartels of collectors [who] get behind the work of a few selected artists; galleries are paying for exhibitions of their artists at museums; and art fairs are showing the same bankable work over and over.” Expect guerilla projections, demonstrations, and more. Here’s some nice news: Italian designer Enzo Mari has granted the reproduction rights of his designs to an organization in Berlin that helps refugees start careers in furniture making. The group CUCULA will be producing Mari’s “Autoprogettazione” series to raise funds for relief activities. [Dezeen]

This Week’s Must-See Art Events: Let’s Keep Gentrifiers Out of Our Museums

This Tuesday, New York artists, activists and renters head out to protest the Brooklyn Real Estate Summit at The Brooklyn Museum. The summit will be where some of the city’s biggest real estate moguls convene to discuss how they can best raise rents so high that it will push working and middle class residents out of the city. It’s essential to attend this protest and will almost certainly be very, very fun. There will be a satirical performance/protest of the Brooklyn Museum’s latest “exhibition”, Double Crossing Brooklyn plus Reverend Billy Talent will perform.

Other events on the horizon: Tonight Justene Williams promises complicit spectatorship, with her installation made of cardboard and paper sets and crazy costumed performers. If you miss it tonight, not to worry: she’ll perform it every day at noon for the rest of the week. For those who love to hear about architecture, Bjarke Ingels will discuss how he and his firm B.I.G. are transforming New York at Cooper Hewitt Tuesday night. Expect to hear about ideas of play. And finally, apartment gallery shows are the rage: we’ve listed two openings this Friday, one in the Upper East Side and another in—you guessed it —Bushwick. Get out and see these shows.

Yes, our world continues to become more and more like a goofy sci-fi film daily. The 3RDi (pronounced “third eye”) is a headband that looks like a Livestrong bracelet with a tiny camera, documenting everything from the vantage point of the wearer’s forehead. As the image above suggests, it’s a must-have accessory for living in the dystopian police state. [PetaPixel]

Warhol’s “Four Marilyns” fetched $32 million last night at the end of Christie’s sale, but the house had guaranteed it at $40 million. Despite the highlights — Lucio Fontana’s egg-shaped painting sold for $29.2 million, Bourgeois’s spider set an auction record at $28.5 million, Freud’s portrait of Camilla’s ex-husband Parker Bowles $35 million — the two-dale Christie’s sale saw a 41% sales drop from May’s auctions, suggesting that the estimates didn’t necessarily match the quality of artworks. The auction gets the equivalent of a shoulder shrug from Josh Baer who called the 20 percent sell through rate the sign of a healthy market. [Baer Faxt]

Sotheby’s released its quarterly report yesterday, and it appears that revenue from auctions themselves is shrinking. The auction house is offsetting that with income from ancillary activities, such as financial services. This may give credence to speculation that the evening sales don’t make money. In a climate where a 1990 Christopher Wool painting that consists entirely of the stenciled text “CATS IS BAG BAG IN RIVER” sells for $17 million and people are disappointed, it’s hard not to argue that the world is insane. Just how crazy has wealth inequality become? So crazy that apparently the super-rich are buying airfields and farms in remote locations to escape anticipated civil unrest. [The Guardian]

David Stewart wins this year’s Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize for a group portrait featuring his daughter and her girlfriends surrounded by their smart phones and coffee takeaway cups. The London-based photographer was awarded £12,000 for the National Portrait Gallery’s signature prize. [British Journal of Photography]

A Frank Lloyd Wright house reopens on the grounds of Alice Walton’s Bentonville, Arkansas-based private museum. Formerly located in New Jersey, the Bachman-Wilson House took 18 months and two trucks in order to make the 1,200 mile move. [The Art Newspaper]

Wow, plans have been unveiled for a new 1,000 foot office/residential building in Downtown Brooklyn that would be taller than any New York building outside of Manhattan. While the arrival of new luxury developments is an inevitability we’ve all come to dread, I have to say this design by SHoP architects is pretty nice. The skyscraper incorporates subtle nods to the city’s gothic and art deco spires without coming across as fake-historic or bland—the two options we’re used to seeing plague the city’s architecture scene. It does, however, lend itself to some Lord of the Rings jokes we should all be expecting to hit Twitter any minute now. [Dezeen]

Long Beach, California is getting a new art/craft fair that organizers describe as “Etsy for metalheads.” [LA Weekly]

Artists protesting the Brooklyn Real Estate Summit at the Brooklyn Museum are trying to raise a bit of cash for signs, city permits, etc. Help them out. [Generosity]

Deborah Kass’s sculpture OY/YO was placed in Brooklyn Bridge Park on Monday and will stand there through August. That’s right by our office, so we’ll be heading out to see the sculpture today. [The New York Times]

Fascinating: A study by the Federal Reserve Bank in Philadelphia finds that residents in gentrifying neighborhoods have slightly higher mobility rates than those in non-gentrifying neighborhoods, but they do have a higher risk of moving to a lower-income neighborhood. (Isn’t this because if you’re forced to move its because your income isn’t rising at the same rate as the neighborhood median?) [Bloomberg Business]
