The dadaists partied at Cabaret Voltaire, Andy Warhol and friends had The Factory, and Ross Bleckner was not only a permanent fixture of The Mudd Club—he owned the building. Party scenes have traditionally been open, accepting environments to which artists were drawn.

Inspired by the recent show at Friedman Benda gallery And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music, the latest installment of The Avant/Garde Diaries takes an intimate look at two artists in the show: Bill Beckley and Agathe Snow.

“Greetings from Captain John. There will be no swimming and no diving.” Sailing on the Frieze ferry to Randall’s Island, the driver told us that we were on our way to vacation, but cautioned against letting loose with freewheeling abandon. Once we landed, that ethos seemed to be in effect at the fair itself: dealers and collectors were having fun, and the fair was certainly crowded, but nobody was breaking out champagne in the early afternoon to celebrate skyrocketing sales.
