This Petra Cortright GIF found on giphy reminds me quite a bit of Jennifer Chan’s “Hands Around the World”, which debuted in GIFbites earlier with this year, paired with the Spice Girls song “2 Become 1”. Both offer a mix of beauty and nauseating 1980s consumerist/early Internet optimism. The shine is off the rose in both departments; I see them as sunsets.

Lorna Mills’s contribution to GIFBites, “Prison: SNAKE,” is almost perfect. “Bang Bang” by Joe Cuba sets a 1960s party vibe, to a snake eating itself in front of the spinning planet. Like so many humping animals, it reminds me of the way the world diddles around on the Internet in a way that’s probably self-destructive, but also really fun and self-felating. Tra la la.
But there’s a darker story behind this GIF.
Google “snake eating itself” and you find the snake in question. It’s a video of a snake eating itself in its water bowl, because it was so stressed out. An onlooker calls it a retard, while it bleeds, presumably to death.
After learning this, turn off your computer’s volume and scroll down to the large-sized GIF. Try not to feel a deep, looming horror.
