Marina Abramović, Laurie Anderson, Jasper Johns, and Cindy Sherman are among the artists who’ve signed a petition against the Trump administration’s proposed federal budget. Under Trump’s plan, the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) would be totally defunded. [artnet News]
This is scary. Artist Karen Fiorito has received multiple death threats since creating an anti-Trump billboard. It was commissioned by Phoenix art gallery La Melgosa, and alludes to Nazism. [The Independent]
Also scary: German police now suspect a Belgian man killed Berlin-based artist Ewa Kowska in a sex game gone wrong. The artist’s body was found with multiple stab wounds, which the killer tried to cover up by setting fire to her apartment. [The Local]

Last week marked the 22nd anniversary of Super Mario Bros., the movie featuring John Leguizamo, Bob Hoskins, and Dennis Hopper. While this isn’t at all newsworthy unto itself, it’s a good excuse to ask the question: How the hell did the screenwriters/production designers squeeze THAT plot and insanely complete vision of an alternate reality out of a dumb video game? Seriously… from the costumes to details like a bumper-car-overhead-grid powering city traffic, that film was gloriously trippy as hell and had almost nothing to do with the Nintendo game. It was a huge flop at the box office and wildly unpopular with the franchise’s fans. But rewatch it as an adult. Trust us. It’s like if John Waters made a mashup of Blade Runner and Dune for children…with dinosaurs. [WTVY]

Surprise! Yet another super-tall, super-luxury megatower is coming to the southern end of Central Park. The historic Helmsley Park Lane Hotel failed to win landmark status, so now it’s being demolished to make way for a 1,210 foot condo tower that no one will probably live in. [New York YIMBY]
In related skyline-changing news, the massive, controversial One Vanderbilt office building has been approved near Grand Central. At 1,501 feet, it will dwarf even the new WTC, which technically has a parapet of “only” 1,368 feet. [The New York Times]
Every Memorial Day weekend, thousands of music fans—from train-hopping crust punks to pond-hopping Black Metal fans from Scandinavia—descend on Baltimore for Maryland Deathfest, the largest “extreme music” festival in North America. This year, Brooklyn-based photographer Adel Souto documented the 100 best back patches at the festival. Many of them are better than most of the art we’ve seen in galleries recently. [No Echo]

I hadn’t been to the Whitney yet, though, so it didn’t occur to me that restaurateurs Mario Carbone, Rich Torrisi, and Jeff Zalaznick would want it to match the museum (which is literally a stone’s throw away). Speaking of mayors, have you heard that Toronto Mayor Rob Ford smokes crack? And yet, his popularity in the polls increased after a video of him smoking crack was released. At one point, there were witnesses. They’re all dead. [The Internet]
The Dallas Museum of Art received an anonymous $9 million gift; $5 million will go toward digitizing its collection, and the remainder will fund its free admission policy. So there are ways for museums to keep admission costs free, eh, Major Museums in New York? [Artforum]
Now that Anthony Antonellis and Arjun Srivasta have been revealed as the founders of Net Artist Daily they’ve been interviewed for DisMagazine by Nicholas O’Brien. [DisMagazine]
We’ve grown a little weary of the breathless news stories on lost and found art, but Michael Kimmelman breaths some new life into the story of found treasures that were once the victims of Nazi looting. Brooklyn Heights Cinema, New York City’s oldest movie theater, will not be given a green light to revamp its historic building. Vanity Fair compiles a list of the six “greatest” living artists. They polled 100 “art-world worthies” to find that the greatest consists of, for the most part, very old white men: Gerhard Richter tops the list, followed by Jasper Johns, Richard Serra, Bruce Nauman, Cindy Sherman, and Ellsworth Kelly. Great Britain has entered into a kangaroo hostage situation. The National Maritime Museum has kept two paintings on view by George Stubbs since 1773, the first ever painting of a kangaroo and a dingo, respectively; however, these paintings weren’t actually owned by the museum, and in 2012, a buyer—from overseas!—purchased the two paintings. In the time since, the museum has rallied for “saving these for the nation,” and just this week, they received a £1.5m donation from someone who lives in Great Britain to do so. Go Patriotism! It’s probably best not to trust a site that can’t figure out how to spell MOCA properly and cites a source that seems to think board member responsibilities include curation. Still, the bitchy speculation is enjoyable. This site claims Brad Pitt isn’t “smart enough” to join MOCA’s board. [ShowbizSpy]
