Thursday Links: Good Month for Bros; All-Male Group Show, Sports-Themed Gallery Open

One of the most unconventional art spaces in the East Village, Modern Love Club, has opened an all-male group show. The “gallery” is actually a matchmaking service’s storefront. Amy Van Doran, the matchmaker/gallerist has thus far been running the space as an exclusively female-artist-focused exhibition space. Now she’s tapped curator Gabrielle Sirkin for the tongue-in-cheek-titled show Men I Love and Other Things I Think About. None of the art seems to have anything in common beyond the fact that the makers have penises, but hey, that’s just the inverse of how all-women shows are curated most of the time. Beyond that, a lot of the work looks pretty good, if not overhung in the cramped space. It’s up through July 14th. [Cool Hunting]
Artist Zissou Tasseff-Elenkoff is opening a new gallery in Chicago, All Star Press, that will feature exclusively art about sports. Is there even enough sports-themed art in the world to keep a gallery roster full? [dna info]
The Srihatta-Samdani Art Centre and Sculpture Park will be Bangladesh’s first major contemporary art museum, with 5,000 sf of galleries, 10,000 sf of residency space for artists, and acres of landscaped gardens. It’s the brainchild of collectors Nadia and Rajeeb Samdani, who have previously organized biennials and other events to draw attention to the impoverished country’s art scene. [Smithsonian]
A megaproject at 80 Flatbush will include much-needed studio space for artists in Downtown Brooklyn. Alloy Development is partnering with BRIC to renovate the building at 505 State Street into free studio space for artists in BRIC’s residency program—doubling the organization’s capacity. This is one of several good decisions Alloy has made in the 80 Flatbush project. It’s an all-too-rare case of a developer starting a project by speaking to neighbors first to see what an area needs. Here, that means preserving the existing historic buildings on the site as cultural space and building vertically to create space for new schools, neighborhood retail, and nearly 900 mixed-income apartments in addition to a profit-generating office tower. More developers should approach projects this way—if you get your neighbors on board with planning from the beginning, it’s easier to fudge zoning and avoid endless lawsuits. [Curbed]
In other development news, the ridiculous-hipster-amenity-laden luxury rental tower Urby (the new Jersey City skyscraper that looks like stacked boxes… it’s kinda cool) will be launching an artist in residence program with Mana Contemporary. Will resident artists have access to the DIY apothecary classes, saltwater pool, and morning meditation deck? One can only hope. [Dezeen]
Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump have failed to disclose their multi-million-dollar art collection in financial papers related to their roles in the Trump administration. The couple is claiming the collection is just for “decoration” and not an investment. That’s certainly a murky distinction—one the Trump clan seems to blur with cosmetic procedures as well. Yay! Artists Space will be reopening in a new location in TriBeCa sometime in 2018. The nonprofit left their longtime home on Greene Street because the owner wanted to create a penthouse. Here, though, they’ll be leasing 8,000 sf spread over two floors from art lovers—their new landlords are Gerry and Martin Weinstein. Martin Weinstein is the cofounder of Art in General. [ARTnews]

This Week’s Must-See Art Events: Bollywood Musicals, Music for Dogs, Zines at the Pool

This might feel like a slow week, but you’ll need to plan wisely. This weekend is packed with big events that span all day or more.

Friday, celebrate NYCxDesign (and Tom Dixon’s first New York showroom) with Dezeen at a block party in SoHo. Then rush to Williamsburg for the opening night of the Brooklyn Art Book Fair. They have programming scheduled all day Saturday too. But you’ll probably want to spend Saturday visiting all the idiosyncratic locales Lenka Clayton and Jon Rubin’s …Circle Through New York intersects. Alternately, head to the other side of the city for open studios in Sunset Park, which run until 6 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.

There’s plenty more to do all over town this week, and even an excuse to catch the PATH to Journal Square if you’re local wanderlust can’t be sated by four boroughs of art events.

This Week’s Must-See Art Events: Future Bodies are Everywhere and Scary

There’s plenty of heady discourse this week—future bodies, hypothetical architectures, theories of curation and criticism—and of course plenty of election-related hand-wringing.

Kick it off Monday night at Jersey City’s Word Bookstore, where the Brooklyn Institute of Social Research is inaugurating a lecture series about cyborgs. Or head to Manhattan’s Red Bull Studios for an event celebrating Grand Arts, the Kansas City project space that launched dozens of conceptual art projects and, now, a catalogue. Tuesday night, Paddy Johnson joins other art critics to talk shop at the Brooklyn Public Library’s Dweck Cultural Center, and Tyler Coburn talks genetic engineering and body mods as the future of humanity at e-flux. If you’re looking for something more hands-on (or a chance to move your feet), there’s a survey of handmade prints at Site:Brooklyn and an epic-looking disco fundraiser for El Museo del Bario Wednesday night. Thursday, White Box is opening a jam-packed group show (with some impressive names!) all about political angst. Friday we’ve got a talk from Maura Riley at Stony Brook Manhattan and Underdonk opening a class-conscious solo show by Patrice Renee Washington.

But the weekend brings us back to what we like the most: artwork that investigates the weird. Selena Gallery’s two person show from Dalia Amara and Florencia Escudero looks for uncanny surrogate female bodies in consumer goods on Saturday night. Sunday, Sascha Braunig’s work at MoMA will likely strike a similar chord. And MARC STRAUS opens a solo show by Chris Joneswho builds fantastical dioramas (pictured) from mundane images.

Was Audrey Munson Picabia’s muse “Udnie”? James Bone makes the case in his new book The Curse of Beauty. She was described as “America’s first supermodel” and her likeness still adorns numerous Beaux-Arts buildings in New York City in sculptures. [The Art Newspaper]
In advance of the dreaded 2019-2020 L Train shutdown, StreetEasy compiled a list of neighborhoods for riders who are considering relocating. Apparently they have never heard of the JMZ? Heading to Harlem or Astoria seems a bit drastic compared to just moving a fraction of a mile south. On the up side, the 18 month transit shortage might lower property values, so this could work in the favor of people who want to live and work in some Brooklyn neighborhoods. [Curbed]
Jersey City has painted over a mural by Gary Wynans, which depicted a giant locally-themed Monopoly board. Wynans was approached by developers who asked to have their real estate projects included in the piece, and it drew ire from groups ranging from the police union to neighborhood activists. [NJ.com]
Temporary Art Review is looking at the artist-run scene in Fayetteville, Arkansas all month long. This includes projects such as a backyard art space and a university gallery run by students. The series totally makes me want to visit! [Temporary Art Review]
Washington-based artist Eames Armstrong interviewed Tom Boram about his visual art and interest in noise music. We checked out Boram’s Star Trek-themed work when we went to Maryland Art Place. [BmoreArt]
Performance artist Orlan has been ordered to pay Lady Gaga €20,000 after losing a copyright lawsuit in French court. Orlan was suing the pop star for ripping off her imagery in the “Born This Way” music video. Uh, Orlan had a point! [artnet News]

Art journal Packet Bi-Weekly‘s is also marking the occasion with a special “Hi-Weekly” issue. But if you’re looking for some non-weed-themed intellectual pursuits, come see our own Paddy Johnson speak at Mana Contemporary in Jersey City on Thursday or grab the latest issue of n+1 at their Friday night launch party at SIGNAL. MFA thesis exhibitions are in full swing, with programming and openings from ICP Bard, SVA’s curatorial practice MA, and Columbia on Thursday, Friday, and Sunday, respectively.

Zaha Hadid’s Innovation Tower at Hong Kong Polytechnic University

Zaha Hadid, 65, died yesterday from a heart attack. Dezeen has not one, but two slideshows commemorating her work. [Dezeen]

Jersey City’s Art House Productions, a 501c3 nonprofit exhibition space and theater, had a pipe burst in their building last month. It caused extensive damage, so they’re fundraising to recover. Today at 7 pm, there’s a wine tasting with music and snacks. Tickets are $50, but they’re tax deductible. [Art House Productions]

In this interview with a ‘top curator” at Amazon Art, we learn that the platform is trying to legitimize itself in the art world with promotions like prints from street artists. Uh, good luck with that strategy. Her job description also sounds suspiciously nothing like “curator” and everything like marketing/sales. [The Huffington Post]

It’s April Fool’s day, which means stay off the web. Last night, Gmail introduced a “mic drop” button that allows users to “mic drop” out of a thread, complete with a minion GIF. And a bunch of people lost their jobs using that function. The joke reinforces the idea that the company is rife with frat dude employees with computer science degrees. Google’s since apologized and pulled the joke. [Metafilter]

New York has announced its budget deal which turns out not to be the total disaster for New York City that Governor Andrew Cuomo had threatened earlier this year. CUNY had its funding restored, New York City was not asked to pay for CUNY, or hundreds of millions in Medicaid. And minimum wage rates will go up. Not so bad! [The New York Times]

Here’s an article with more than you ever needed to know about the Ibrahim Mahama v.s. Stefan Simchowitz and Jonathan Ellis King case. Mahama is now countersuing the dealers, who had sued the young artist for disowning pieces made by cutting up his installations. Everyone in this case sounds insane. [ART News]

The Longhua Funeral Parlour in Shanghai is 3D printing body parts for damaged or “incomplete” corpses. [The Telegraph]

Columbia students are protesting a Henry Moore sculpture they call a “monstrosity”. In an op ed at the Columbia Daily Spectator four students write. “Whatever its artistic merits, placing the sculpture in front of Butler Library will put an eyesore on an otherwise crisp, geometric, and symmetrical landscape. Moore’s ghoulish figure clashes with the neoclassical aesthetic instantly recognizable to generations of Columbians.” And this jewel, pulled out by Jillian Steinhauer. “All of this is not to say that modern sculpture has no place at the University. It’s Old Masters Week! That might not have much appeal to the world-at-large, but all week, New York’s auction houses are putting Renaissance works up on the block. One new development this year: Sotheby’s is introducing a private selling exhibition in conjunction with its auction. [Gallerist NY]
Mana Contemporary is hedging its bets on Jersey City’s tourism industry. The New Jersey-based art gallery, studio, and storage space has plans to build a Jersey City hotel, as well as a sculpture park and theatre near the Mana campus. And because Mana owner Moishe Mana has money—or an affinity for risk—new Mana “branches” are in the works for London and Los Angeles, and there’s a plan for a street-art museum close to the Holland Tunnel.
