This Week’s Must-see Art Events: Dick Pics, GIFs, and Psychic TV

With a few exceptions, such as Lorna Mills’ At Play in the Field of the Lord opening Saturday at TRANSFER, there doesn’t seem to be an overwhelming number of great shows opening this week. Which is kind of nice, actually. Take some time get the most out of art instead of rushing around to see it all. Tomorrow night, head to James Concannon’s book launch and leisurely leaf through his collection of dick pics. Attend a lecture or take a tour with Visual AIDS and reminisce about the 80s. Head to a discussion about feminist art at Artists Space on Friday. And Saturday, spend six hours listening to experimental music and watching performances from Psychic TV and other genre-bending artists. If that hasn’t expanded your mind enough, head to MoMA on Sunday for a documentary about the surreal album art of Storm Thorgerson. After a few busy weeks, isn’t it nice to sit with art and relax?

Last week marked the 22nd anniversary of Super Mario Bros., the movie featuring John Leguizamo, Bob Hoskins, and Dennis Hopper. While this isn’t at all newsworthy unto itself, it’s a good excuse to ask the question: How the hell did the screenwriters/production designers squeeze THAT plot and insanely complete vision of an alternate reality out of a dumb video game? Seriously… from the costumes to details like a bumper-car-overhead-grid powering city traffic, that film was gloriously trippy as hell and had almost nothing to do with the Nintendo game. It was a huge flop at the box office and wildly unpopular with the franchise’s fans. But rewatch it as an adult. Trust us. It’s like if John Waters made a mashup of Blade Runner and Dune for children…with dinosaurs. [WTVY]

Surprise! Yet another super-tall, super-luxury megatower is coming to the southern end of Central Park. The historic Helmsley Park Lane Hotel failed to win landmark status, so now it’s being demolished to make way for a 1,210 foot condo tower that no one will probably live in. [New York YIMBY]
In related skyline-changing news, the massive, controversial One Vanderbilt office building has been approved near Grand Central. At 1,501 feet, it will dwarf even the new WTC, which technically has a parapet of “only” 1,368 feet. [The New York Times]
Every Memorial Day weekend, thousands of music fans—from train-hopping crust punks to pond-hopping Black Metal fans from Scandinavia—descend on Baltimore for Maryland Deathfest, the largest “extreme music” festival in North America. This year, Brooklyn-based photographer Adel Souto documented the 100 best back patches at the festival. Many of them are better than most of the art we’ve seen in galleries recently. [No Echo]

Ha ha! A delicious pan of Kappo Masa, Larry Gagosian’s ridiculously expensive restaurant opened in collaboration with chef Masayoshi Takayama. Yakayama’s flagship restaurant, Masa, was described as the city’s “greatest sushi restaurant” by the New York Times former dining critic Sam Sifton and given three stars. Pete Wells, the current dining critic for the Times gives Kappo Masa 0 stars, and explains that it would have only received one, if the prices were better. Service, apparently, is terrible. Before Irréversible, There Was Henri-Georges Clouzot

It’s good news that MoMA will be showing a series of films by Henri-Georges Clouzot between now and Christmas. Long before today’s vogue for “extremity,” Clouzot made films that fiercely challenged audiences’ moral and emotional sensibilities, creating some of the most admirable achievements in French cinema. If, like me, you wish there were more movies like “Enter the Void,” or “L’Enfant,” “Demonlover” or “Ma MÃ¨re,” then this is a retrospective for you.
