Such a great read. Kyle Chayka defines a new type of homogenous interior accessed and influenced by digital platforms such as FourSquare, Airbnb, and myriad co-working/co-living startups: AirSpace. In AirSpace, a coffee shop in Portland looks just like a coffee shop in Shanghai: edison bulbs and white-painted exposed brick. Apartments all have knockoff midcentury modern pieces and accent rugs, and shared office spaces have reclaimed wood and Eames chairs. [The Verge]

Oooh. Christian Viveros-Faune writes that “No Problem: Cologne/New York 1984–1989” at David Zwirner is “neither a school, nor a movement, nor a style. It is, instead, a coordinated history.” Our favorite passage here:

Cologne’s premier bad boy, Martin Kippenberger, squares off with America’s king of banality, Jeff Koons, in a single 19th Street gallery that holds a number of period works by each. The effect is bracing. Rather than call up similarities among the button-pushing works of each artist, the invited comparisons favor the anarchic, self-immolating energy of Kippenberger. Dead or alive, he calls out Koons’ millimetrically calculated excess for what it is—a lightweight reflection on commodity fetishism, this time in the form of kitsch statuary. [Artnet]

Our events posts just got a whole lot easier, thanks to founder Barry Hoggard’s new service Filterizer: a one-page list of the season’s best art shows in the New York City area. [Filterizer]
Marina Galperina and Kyle Chayka’s National Selfie Portait Gallery has been getting tons of press from Yahoo News, TIME, and The Atlantic. (We’ll note that Galperina’s first selfie post was written for AFC back in 2010.) Yahoo News doesn’t waste any time getting to the real question; is this art? That’s the second sentence. PS1 Curator and Director Klaus Biesenbach isn’t having any of this. This morning he indirectly acknowledged the exhibition tweeting, “everybody seems obsessed with talking about selfies…..it is nothing else than looking into a mirror and spreading what you vainly see.” Well, I guess that’s settled. Your Guide to Armory Week

Even though the hum around Armory week seems subdued this year, visiting half-a-dozen-plus art fairs can in a few days’ time can feel like a week on a Eurail pass. Naive outsiders are treated harshly, the food is unfamiliar and overpriced, and you spend a lot of time snooping around taking pictures. It’s useful to have an index that you can depend on to guide you towards the things that are worth seeing and away from the things that aren’t. A guidebook if you will. Here’s ours.
