Imagery of atomic test sites loomed large in public consciousness during the 1960s and 70s, when weekly atomic tests made front page news in the New York Times and in Life magazine. During the Cold War, the US detonated detonated over 80 devices between 10kt and 1200 kt each, for a total explosive yield of around ~50,000,000 tons: an overabundant earthmoving that happened to coincide precisely with the birth of Land Art.

GIF of the Day: DF’s Growing Pains

We’re not sure who made the above GIF, but it was making the social media rounds amongst the gallerists Paddy and I met when we visited Material Art Fair in Mexico City a few weeks ago. It’s a pretty obvious commentary on the metropolis’s growing pains—sometimes this enormous city feels like it’s bursting at the seams, and it’s often a struggle to accommodate the building boom while respecting the amazing architectural heritage here. There’s no other city in the world that has both ancient pyramids and modernist masterpieces so futuristic that they served as filming locations for Total Recall.

I thought about this GIF today, when I saw this video (just made available in English), and petition, about preserving the 1979 Espacio Escultórico. It’s the city’s largest public artwork, designed by artists and architects Helen Escobedo, Manuel Felguérez, Mathias Goeritz, Hersúa, Sebastian and Federico Silva, and Roberto Acuna. Somewhere between pre-Columbian architecture, brutalism, and land art, it’s one of those totally “only in DF” spaces that make this city so magical. Unfortunately the sculpture is located on the campus of UNAM, a university that hasn’t maintained the space well (despite being a UNESCO world heritage site) and has constructed a highrise that blocks views of the volcanic landscape essential to the artists’ intent.

Anyway, part of Mexico City’s allure is that it’s a city that’s always changing but has pockets that feel timeless. I signed this petition, and I’d encourage others to do so too. It would be nice if UNAM could work out a compromise between growth and preservation that honors the uniqueness of its existing cultural assets. It would be a move that could set a precedent for other sensitive developments in the capital—because one day, it’s inevitable that DF’s sprawling skyline will advance toward Teotihuacan. And no one wants a view of condos from their pyramid.

The National Assembly of State Arts Agencies has released a state-by-state report on projected per-capita art appropriations for fiscal year 2016. So where are an artist’s best chances of getting funding? Unsurprisingly, urban Northeastern states like New York, Maryland, and Massachusetts spend way more on the arts per person than conservative states. Though the islands have us all beat: Puerto Rico, Hawaii, and the Virgin Islands spend more money per capita on the arts than any U.S. state except Minnesota. And although the District of Columbia’s arts funding is down this year, it still spends a relatively whopping $22.30 per person on arts appropriations—more than anywhere else in the country. Surprisingly, the West Coast is about as bad as the deep south when it comes to underfunding the arts. [NASAA]

For five years, there’s been an “art embargo” passed by the Russian government that forbids Russian museums or state archives lending cultural material to the United States. This all stems from a lawsuit by the New York-based Jewish organization Chabad in the hopes of securing artifacts it claims belongs to their people from Russian state collections. It’s a long story. Anyway, The Museum of Russian Art in Minneapolis found a very contemporary solution to the hurdle this presents curators. For the exhibition Faces of War: Russia in World War I, Russian scholars digitized photographs, recordings, and artifacts that the American institution then reproduced, all without breaking the embargo.
