If you were to start at the corner of NE 36th and 1st in Miami’s Wynwood Art District, and start walking towards the Miami Project, the directions might look a little like this: Start with the glowing white tent of the Brazil Art Fair on your left, and walk south, past the glowing white tents of the CONTEXT Art Fair, Red Dot Art Fair, and Art Miami. If you hit SPECTRUM Miami or the ArtSpot Art Fair, you’ve gone too far. One begins to suspect there are a few too many satellite fairs.

Slowly but surely, galleries are reaching a breaking point with the art fair circuit. Escape isn’t an option for most galleries. Instead of opting out, we’re seeing a rise in specialized fairs, those that provide an alternative to the white-walled booth model. Moving Image is one of those fairs, and it has all the makings of a solid future.

A Quiet Opening Night at the PULSE Art Fair

It was a quiet evening at the PULSE art fair on opening night, though dealers remained upbeat nonetheless. “The real opening happens Thursday morning,” Lisa Romero of Schroeder Romero quickly reminded us. That remark was followed up by PULSE Director Cornell DeWitt, who reiterated that “Thursday is always our door buster.” The proceeds from last night’s opening, including ticket sales and a silent auction, will be donated to Lotus House, a shelter for homeless women and infants just a few blocks away from PULSE.

After the slideshows of NADA, SEVEN, and Art Basel, we offer Pulse as a palette-cleanser.  The fair, featuring 90-odd galleries in Miami’s Ice Palace, wasn’t the best we’ve seen. Normally a little better photography at the fair is on view, so it’s a shame Pulse’s strength wasn’t better exhibited. Better luck next time I guess.
