This staircase is Hudson Yard’s obligatory “Public Art Feature.” Or a hive for giant robot bees? Whatever.

That weird, dystopian Hudson Yards megaproject is getting a fittingly weird, vaguely dystopian piece of very-expensive public art. Thomas Heatherwick has designed a giant hive-like tower of staircases to nowhere that looks like it will be extremely popular for suicides when the property bubble bursts again. Or as a filming location for young adult sci-fi adaptations in which teenagers have to fight to the death to topple tyranny or something. [Dezeen]

London is proposing to target specific neighborhoods for preservation and expansion of artist studios, housing, and creative industry jobs. Although the city has remained a center of art and design, there’s considerable fear that rampant gentrification will drive out young talent and cripple the creative sector. Tuesday Links: Umbilical Cord Art is a Thing

“Umbilical cord art” is now a trend, according to Buzzfeed.

Strangest headline of the day: “Why I Won’t Judge Women For Making Umbilical Cord Art”. [Refinery29]

Berlin’s legendary nightclub Berghain has been deemed a “high art” institution by German courts. This entitles the club to pay a lower tax rate than an “entertainment” business. ARTnews defends this “art v.s. entertainment” decision by pointing out that Art21 host Claire Danes is a fan of Berghain. But seriously, cities should be doing more to help keep their nightlife afloat. [ARTnews]

Alec Baldwin has escalated his dispute with Mary Boone and is now suing the gallery over a Ross Bleckner painting. Baldwin had approached Boone in the hopes of acquiring Bleckner’s 1996 work “Sea and Mirror.” Instead of tracking that down, Boone just sold Baldwin another, identical version of the painting, also by Bleckner. Tommy Hilfiger is throwing a fashion-show-cum-carnival on a pier. This is just one of the “unconventional” venues for NYFW shows this year, ranging from public spaces to Department of Sanitation salt storage sheds (yes, really). [Curbed]

Melania Trump used $20,000 of the Donald J. Trump Foundation’s funds to buy a six-foot-tall portrait of the Donald by “speed painter” Michael Israel. To be fair, this was at an auction benefitting a charity for children. But The Washington Post reports that it’s one of many shady dealings at the Foundation. [Hyperallergic]

The Finnish government has refused state funding for the €130 million Guggenheim Helsinki. Several of the politicians who opposed the new museum outpost argued that they would support a privately-funded Guggenheim, but that the Finnish government’s share of construction costs would not be an appropriate use of state funds. Shortly after the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro contrived to convert the grounds of an elite golf course into a series of national art schools, housed in creative architecture designed around economic restrictions such as an embargo on imported US steel. Unfortunately, the campus became abandoned and neglected. Today, it’s one of many culturally significant sites in the country that face preservation challenges from the coming tourism boom. It would be so great to see this complex restored and put to use as an art school. Knowing the impact tourism has had on other islands in the Caribbean, though, it wouldn’t be too surprising to see the site ironically returned to use as a golf course, unfortunately. Chinese social media users are bashing painter Guo Jia, accusing her of destroying historic frescos she had been tasked with restoring. We can’t find any before-or-after images of her work, but is this the Chinese equivalent of Spain’s “Beast Jesus” in-the-making? [China Daily]

Are the Met and MoMA at war? The Lauder’s cubist collection went to the Met instead of MoMA, leading some to believe that, with shared interests, these institutions will need to fight over donors. It’s a juicy read, five pages full of quotes from the rich and art-famous. Met Director Thomas Campbell on MoMA: “sometimes we’re frenemies.” Larry Gagosian, being himself: “I love expansion!” [Vanity Fair]
Marketing whiz and artist Ryder Ripps has a show of Instagram paintings opening at Postmasters. It’s not even up, and it’s already received one bad review. [Jezebel]
Microsoft vaults itself into the future with the creation of HoloLens, a hologram headset yet-to-be released to the general public. Brian Crecente was able to demo one of the models, which comes with virtual reality, Skype, 3D gaming, and a 3D image-building capabilities. The future is now, though it feels like fiction: “The effect of wearing the glasses also doesn’t feel real. But not because it seems fake, rather because it is initially a bit unbelievable.” [Polygon]

Houston, Texas’s Flower Man House, an “ever-evolving masterpiece of African-American yard show art” kept by the late Cleveland Turner, will be demolished. (Scattered throughout Houston are incredible homes full of “yard show art,” for lack of a better term.) Do not mess with art critics; you might get sued. At least that’s what happened when Danish artist Kristian von Hornsleth pasted art critic Camilla Stockmann’s face into a pornographic collage where she’s the center of a gangbang. Those real mature antics didn’t get Hornsleth anywhere except court. Now, judges have found Hornsleth guilty of copyright infringement for using Stockmann’s image without permission. We are now living through the second golden age of American philanthropy. Is this a good thing? A democratic society is committed, at least in principle, to the equality of citizens. The Art Handling Olympics

Calling all art handlers! The Art Handling Olympics wants you! Register your team of four on their website and go head to head with New York City’s best, Sunday March 21st. The first competition of its kind, The Art Handling Olympics (AHO) celebrates the art world’s unsung heroes. These are the people who figure out how to fit over-sized sculptures into undersized elevators, find the straight line in a crooked paintings on slanted walls and eat the double park ticket so clients don’t have to! This March we find out who the best in the business really are.

Competition founder Shane Caffrey says he’s pleased with AHO’s response thus far, and enjoys the team names handlers have come up with. “My favorite is “Well Hung” he told me through a bit of laughter. Knowing there’s a “Special Delivery” portion to the competition makes me think that group will need to bring a little more to the table for the win though. Nobody’s dick is going to drive a truck.

I’m told the competition is still selecting judges, so I’m taking the liberty of offering up a few suggestions of people I’d like to see participate. In no particular order those are: Mary Boone (dealer), Jeffrey Deitch (dealer), Jerry Saltz (critic, former trucker), Andrea Rosen (dealer), Brian Alfred (artist), Sue Schaffner (artist), Cynthia Yardley (artist + Atelier 4’s art fair and expo co-ordinator), Lauren Cornell, (Executive Director of Rhizome and Adjunct Curator for the New Museum).
