When a new pigment hits the marketplace, all bets are off. Last year, it was the accidental discovery of a new blue pigment by chemists at the Oregon State University. This year, it‘s vantablack, and it looks like Anish Kapoor has already rained on the parade by buying the exclusive rights to a black so pure it’s absorbs 99.96% of light. This has pissed off other artists — does a blue-chip artist really deserve exclusive rights on a pigment? — and one of them, painter Christian Furr, is already planning a whole series using the shade. The Hnatyshyn Foundation has launched a new awards program that will give 150 cash awards totalling $1.5 million to Indigenous artists in 2017. [Canadian Art]
Gerhard Richter has penned an open letter decrying the closure of the Museum Morsbroich near Cologne. The German institution, frequently named the best museum in North-Rhine Westphalia and has hosted shows in the past by artists like Yves Klein, Rosemarie Trockel and Richter himself, is closing as part of municipal cost-cutting measures. Worst, it appears the city wants to sell the museum’s collection. In his letter, Richter rightfully states that “a public art collection is not a financial investment that can be plundered depending on the cash situation. It is a piece of art history and represents the cultural memory of its trustees.” [The Art Newspaper]
Institutions around the world are deaccessioning pieces at a breakneck speed. This can help museums pay off debts from expansion projects, but is also “the cultural equivalent of burning the furniture to heat the house”. [Maclean’s]
Who knew 10cc’s “The Things We Could Do For Love” could be used as the soundtrack for an animated musical sequence on chapters 19-40 from the Book of Exodus? This comes from Nina Paley’s upcoming animated film Seder-Masochism. [Vimeo]

Are the Met and MoMA at war? The Lauder’s cubist collection went to the Met instead of MoMA, leading some to believe that, with shared interests, these institutions will need to fight over donors. It’s a juicy read, five pages full of quotes from the rich and art-famous. Met Director Thomas Campbell on MoMA: “sometimes we’re frenemies.” Larry Gagosian, being himself: “I love expansion!” [Vanity Fair]
Marketing whiz and artist Ryder Ripps has a show of Instagram paintings opening at Postmasters. It’s not even up, and it’s already received one bad review. [Jezebel]
Microsoft vaults itself into the future with the creation of HoloLens, a hologram headset yet-to-be released to the general public. Brian Crecente was able to demo one of the models, which comes with virtual reality, Skype, 3D gaming, and a 3D image-building capabilities. The future is now, though it feels like fiction: “The effect of wearing the glasses also doesn’t feel real. But not because it seems fake, rather because it is initially a bit unbelievable.” [Polygon]
Every month I await the Netflix death watch on Gothamist. It answers many a serial TV-watcher’s needs: which shows will go away forever over the next two weeks, and which will take their place. Craig Anthony Miller is suing the Toll Brothers development company for using his murals to advertise for their condos. Ironically, the mural was torn down and replaced by townhouses, but he’d copyrighted the mural with permission from the wall’s owner. Smart move. [ANIMAL New York]
Houston, Texas’s Flower Man House, an “ever-evolving masterpiece of African-American yard show art” kept by the late Cleveland Turner, will be demolished. (Scattered throughout Houston are incredible homes full of “yard show art,” for lack of a better term.) Recommended Shows Round Up: Chelsea, LES, & Even the UES

By now, we’ve surveyed the fall landscape in New York City, and we’ve seen enough to confidently air some complaints about that. If this tells you anything, Jen and Paul’s bus tour, which drives around mocking Chelsea, tops our list.

And among the other gems: a reconstruction of a 2007 installation by the late Jason Rhoades; Regina Rex’s new Manhattan gallery; and a show by Sadie Benning. And surprisingly, Paddy Johnson likes the Dan Graham pavilion on the Met’s rooftop. Those, and other redeeming shows, after the jump!

Why is painting today so flippant? According to art historian Lane Relyea, it’s because artists just don’t have any darn time: “[T]he social identity of the painter can be salvaged and recuperated for today: by reconceiving it as the painter who always goes to parties, curates shows, writes a blog. Somebody who’s like, wow, when does he ever have time to make those paintings? And the paintings look like it. They’re small, they’re more sketchlike in a way….” [Painter’s Table via Bad at Sports]
A two-ton rubber duck sculpture by Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman was washed away by torrential rainfall in China’s southwestern Guiyang City. A local radio station to the city’s public: “If you live by the river and see an 18 meter tall big yellow duck please call.” [The Guardian]
Evil building developers keep on being evil. Extell Development Company is building a high-rise at 40 Riverside Boulevard, and as part of the deal, some of the units needed to be reserved for affordable housing. While plans have been set in place to dissolve the Corcoran Gallery of Art, opponents have just moved forward (again) in their attempts to keep the Corcoran alive. [New York Times]
Retired Detroit workers vote to lower their expected pension benefits, thus reducing the city’s debt. Had the workers voted the other way, the pledges involved in the Grand Bargain would have vanished. Seems like Detroit is one step closer to protecting it’s collection at the DIA. They came out with a compromise, a 0-3% increase for apartments with a one year lease and a .5 to 4.5 increase for 2 year leases and a 0-10 percent allowance for subletters. Thursday Links: Deli Sandwiches are Getting a Huge BJ

The Times has run two stories on William Kentridge. He’s closing an opera at the Metropolitan Opera, and opening a show at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. I get that these are big institutions, but with so many artists working in the city without coverage, couldn’t they have rolled this into one feature? (His show opens Tuesday.) Let the Frieze reports begin. Take one: Jonathan Jones is upset that Frieze Masters takes “the entire history of art and turns it into an elitist shopping mall.” He then complains that the fair turns art into congealed money. To complain that an art fair is just for the rich is to fail to understand the point of an art fair, which is to sell art to rich people. But the actual review, which discusses fakes, substandard Brueghels, bad medieval paintings is more substantive than the usual crap Jones churns out. [The Guardian]
Adrian Searle thinks Frieze has better lighting and wider aisles this year, and while the art hasn’t improved much he says galleries seem to be trying harder. (Not sure how “trying harder” was determined, but okay.) Oh, and Jennifer Rubell continues to make bad art. [The Guardian]
