This Week’s Must-See Art Events: The AFC Goth Benefit and More

The time has finally come. Our Goth Benefit is here. We’ll be converting Collapsable Hole into a goth wonderland, complete with drag performers, surprise guests, and options such as handcuffs for couples. (We’re also having a goth couple outfit contest, so plan accordingly). If last year’s benefit was any indication, this is basically going to be the party of the year.

Wednesday, nurse your hangover with a likely-nipple-tastic Betty Tompkins solo show at Marlborough Contemporary. Other highlights this week include Siebren Versteeg’s digital paintings at bitforms on Thursday, the annual Seven on Seven conference at the New Museum on Saturday, and Sunday’s open studios at the Studio Museum in Harlem.

A performing arts center slated for development at Ground Zero could face a $100 million shortfall if federal officials retract the unspent funds the city received after Sept. 11. Basically, this nonsense is the result of government agencies fighting with each other. The Port Authority, which says it is owed $68 million by the Lower Manhattan Development Council (LMDC). The LMDC says it owes $45 million. Port Authority is refusing to hand over control for the site until they are paid. [Crains]
Related: one of many lawsuits by the City Club of New York may have finally succeeded in derailing the Thomas-Heatherwick-designed Pier 55. This is kind of a bummer. Of all the architect’s upcoming controversial projects, this one was by far the best and least offensive, especially in a part of the city that could use some non-High-Line green space. One of the arguments against the park was that it would obscure the natural beauty of the waterfront… Manhattan’s obviously man-made waterfront, where it would be straddling the ruins of two man-made piers. What a ridiculous group of crotchety fun-spoilers. [Dezeen]
One of the NEA’s most important functions is supplying insurance coverage to museum exhibitions. Without the Arts and Artifacts Indemnity Program, many cross-institutional exhibitions simply couldn’t happen. It’s saved museums an estimated $450 million but has only resulted in $4,700 in payouts from the federal government in the past 42 years. Cristo and Jeanne Claude aren’t the only ones who can bring fences into New York City for public art. Chinese activist and artist Ai Weiwei will build over 100 fences around the city for his installation project, “Good Fences Make Good Neighbors” this fall, thanks to a commission by the Public Art Fund. The work is inspired by the international migration crisis. [Gothamist]

While the US has been plunged into a political drama out of a particularly boring episode of Game of Thrones, we have been neglecting Canadian political/news media scandals. Namely: #lacgate. Yesterday I clicked on the article “The Five Signs You’ve Written a Bad Column”, hoping for some journalism advice. Instead, I was introduced to the saga of columnist Leah McLaren, who wrote about her experience attempting to secretly breastfeed Conservative MP Michael Chong’s baby at a houseparty. This is so much weirder (probably) than whatever the fuck Devin Nunes was doing during his inexplicable missing time. [VICE]

NEW INC’s “Public Beta” Showcase Is Incubating Something Weird

It’s been about 35 years since we were first promised a viable, commercial virtual reality headset. The time for that promise to be fulfilled seems to be upon us with major technology companies going all in on the research and infrastructure that will be necessary to make it happen both as a technology and a product.

NEW INC, the New Museum’s ambitious effort to fuse artist residencies, coworking spaces and business incubators into one singular program, has had two years to become a fully-formed innovation. It’s tough to say whether that’s happened yet, but the latest “Public Beta” (on through July 31st, part 2 will run from August 4-7th) is certainly different than any exhibition going right now and indicates that what’s to come could be a weird and original niche between several disciplinary worlds.

This Week’s Must See Events: Fear and Loathing in the Art World

Politics, politics, politics. Practically every event we have this week has some sort of political edge. From a video art retrospective dedicated to the political conventions of 1972 to Martha Wilson invading the persona of Trump, the campaign season is infiltrating the exhibition space.

Take a break from being yelled at on Facebook by someone you’ve only met once and hit the gallery. People will surely be more open to a dialogue when they can’t just click unfollow. Right? Right???

NEW INC Executive Director Julia Kaganskiy Predicts More NEW INC

We’ve been following NEW INC since it’s founding in 2014. An arm of the New Museum design to offer professional development opportunities to creatives in all fields, NEW INC offers a much-needed support model. Now, two years in and newly accepted applications for its September 2016-2017 term, how’s the non-profit doing?

“One thing that has been unique about NEW INC and incredibly important to our mission is that it’s not a one-size-fits-all community or approach to the idea of entrepreneurship,” says Julia Kaganskiy, NEW INC’s director, in an email interview with AFC. “We believe that even an individual artist or designer in the program is an entrepreneur — a business of one.”

At NEW INC Demo Day 2015, a Cheery Future for Art and Tech

When art mingles with tech, there can be a rush to mass-market artsy/techy products; in the early days of new tech, those products can sound terribly goofy, and they often aim at self-improvement. Take, for example, from 1969, artist Thomas Tadlock’s “Archetron,” a color synthesizer that turned black-and-white signals on a TV into colorful psychedelic imagery. It ended up being sold as a “prophecy, meditation, and healing machine” at a new age center in New York. That product never really caught on; and we tend to remember Tadlock more for his art contribution than a commercial one.

That, or everyone else is really excited about going to the beach. For those of us who’ll be in the city, there’s an array of talks, from 1980s goth culture at the Morbid Anatomy Museum to a symposium on psychoacoustics at ALLGOLD. New York, you never ever bore us.

An artist in Alberta has covered his 800 acre property with artwork and copyrighted it in an effort to stop oil corporations from drilling on his land. Apparently, a document his lawyer drew up claims that any disturbance of the top six inches of land constitutes a copyright infringement. This makes no sense to us. Columbia visual arts student Emma Sulkowicz will carry her mattress with her everywhere until her alleged rapist is brought to justice. She claims that she was raped in her own bed, and she’s one of 23 students who filed a federal complaint against the school for mishandling rape cases. Two other students have claimed that Sulkowicz’s alleged rapist raped them, too. Alleged rapist is still attending Columbia. [New York Magazine]
